A seriously good torch.

We just got in, at Divers Warehouse today, a FaMi umbilical 50W LED torch. It is VERY bright. In fact it is supposed to give off as much light as a HID 50W lamp. Because its LED the batteries will last longer and the bulbs will be alot cheaper, although as they are good for 20,000 hours you probably won't need to replace them!! FaMi told us the average life of the 4 bulbs is 50,000 hours.

LED is the next step forward for divers lamps. Watch out for this one. I think it will retail at around £400, although it is that new we don't have a price for it. As yet, there are only two in the country, one is sold to one of DW's customers and the other, I understand is going to our very own John Bantin (JJJBBB) for a review. Look out for it in a dive mag soon.

Top torch, pretty soon we'll all have LED!!

I'm yet to be convinced on how well the beam penetrates on LED torchs.

Don't get me wrong, I've got two FAMI torches and think they are great but not seen LED to touch them yet.

But LED technology has come quite some way so be interesting to see JB's review.

Diving with Tom on a particulary murky Channel dive at Christmas (it was pitch black at 25m at around 1pm), his Fa Mi LED torch was pretty much the same as my Halcyon 10w HID.

...and diving with Tom and Ahar (and GottheBug) at Wraysbury a few weeks ago, there was not much difference between the FAMI 4 Led and the Hid... both similar beam colours, ( and both much brighter than my "standard" torch )

OK I'm getting convinced!

So what are the market offerings for umbilical LED torches?

The Halcyon 10w is a bit better than the Fa & Mi (power LED 4) - it has a better, tighter hotspot, and beam penetration is a bit better. But then it should be better for the price difference.

However, I'm very pleased with the Fa & Mi. And you can hand mount it without worrying about an umbilical cable. Which is nice.

On the basis of my torch, I'd expect the one Andy is talking about to be better than the Halcyon 10w.
