Smile Weight displacement

I have just been given a large torch by an old boy who no longer dives.there no identifying marks on it but it looks the muts nuts of hand helds.It weighs in @ 7lb any one know what reduction in lead that equates to ? as i fancy going to lightup the north sea with this beast on Sat.

Have you tried it in the bath, it may float? anything you can drop should not be compensated for, cos if you drop it you could end up heading for the surface.

Sorry old bean, but you will have to take it into the water to get a figure as its wieght on land has nothing to do with it's weight in water. e.g. A ton of polystyereen will still float!

Best guess is that it will be slightly negative, a pound or two.

Sorry to jump on this thread, but if you know the amount of weight you need to make something neutral in fresh, is there an easy calculation to salt???

Yes. You need 2.7% extra weight in salt water. Well 2.7% extra if it's lead or such. A big block of Ali won't help as much.

2.7% of what??

....you mean 2.7% extra of total body weight don't you?

Excluding the weight of dive gear which I assume to be neutral in salt water My weight is around 90 kg and I carry 10kg of lead in salt water.

In fresh water I deduct about 3% or 2.7kg off 90 --->> so I wear 7kg lead in fresh water .

I did the maths once and this works in practice!
