Well that was the other thing i was considering but the price is a bit of a difference to the JMD and was wondering if it was worth the extra £200.

I would say no, but hey, I had the JMD and not the Metalsub so am biased. Was I tempted to get rid of the JMD and buy a Metalsub? No.

Spares sometimes seemed to be an issue with the Metalsub. They are supported by Northern Diver in the UK, but a couple of times there was a wait for parts to arrive from Germany (replacement chargers etc.)

Thanks for that, Mikes Waterfront Warehouse now have the Metalsub franchise, may it have something todo with the new Northern Diver pony clone, sorry clamp that has come out . I think the parts may be an issue for the Metalsub especialy since the JMD's are only made about 20 miles from me.

Good one! Have you found a good source for the JMD? Think in heading towards them after reading some old threads.

Often come up on ebay second hand. I think I got mine from Burntisland Watersports in Edinburgh - that was five years ago though.

Jmd

1. Why not try to buy direct from them?
2. Try SDS near Sheffield

I have the JMD green umbilical and have been using it for a good few years. The bulb is a 50w effort and is comparable to a 10w HID. Burn time is quoted as about 70mins, although recently I have noticed this has dropped off to about 50-60mins. Being able to focus the beam is handy and with an imaginative bit of cable tying you can get it to fit a custom divers goodman-style handle well enough.

The support from JMD is excellent, I recently sent it back for the first time in years and for the standard service charge (£40) the changed the reflector, all o-rings, the cable and the rubber boots on each end of the cable. as well as sorting out the original problem (loose connection).

On the down side it does take a long time to charge (overnight), there is no HID upgrade (doesnt really matter though) and the battery pack is v big.

I had considered getting one of the Salvo lights to replace it but for the sort of diving I do (normally one deep dive a day) it is a good tool, so there wasnt any point in replacing it.

In summary I would say its a rather old style bit of kit, but is a proper workhorse.

Paul
