I've got the 4 led umbilical from fami and its super! Silly long burn time (didn't charge it at all during a trip to the red sea) and very bright for a long distance. Haven't tried it next to a salvo or other hid umbilical cos I don't know anyone who's got one

Nope, still doesn't look "reasonable"! Sorry. As i said it looks comapritively good, but in absolute terms it is still 600 nicker for a bulb and some batteries!

And that doesn't come in under my "reasonable radar" ........ lots of people obviously disagree, but the difference between that and a Halcyon 10W is a diving holiday! And I, personally, don't think that most people need the performance of the Salvo. It is a lovely to have thing, but I could never bring myself to do it. ;(

If you've seen one in action then you've far greater willpower than me.

Well, it is cheap stuff and it comes almost from the local gardening store, but it works fine and it's very solid. We tried to destroy one by hitting it with a hammer... we succeeded but we really had to hit it hard - http://www.stde.ch/en/faq.php

the 10w salvo is also a cracking torch - it blew everything away on our club trip to oban (after i charged it!) to the point where my buddy said it was for "scared" divers to they could see everything and not worry...!

I have a greenforce hid. I don't use a torch a great deal (well underwater that is I've used the greenforce on land more) and it can either be used with the umbi or as a hand held. It seems that you can buy different heads and it all seems interchangeable.

I suppose lots of torches are like this though.

Save the money on the torch and get a guide dog.

After seeing yours & Ricks in action on Weds, that's why I'm desperately trying to get hold of Phill to see if he can get me one in time for the St. Abbs & Farnes gig next week.

Temptation & shiny gadgets.............cannot resist.

I've got a Salvo 21W 9Ah. The YD "torch of choice". You need to know a few things?

1. Is it tough? The delrin bits are indestructibubble. The connectors incide the battery housing need nursing a bit as they get stressed when connecting them up. The bulb is hot strikable and doesn't have the little wire that always breaks on the Halcyon bulbs.

2. Is it bright? Yes. Everyone you dive with will get a fit of the "I wants the precious" after you surface. I fired it up and shone it on the same patch of ground my car headlights (2x55W) were on and all you could see was beautiful blue light.

3. What about the light colour? It's a bit yellower than the Halcyon ones but still much much bluer than halogen. It penetrated crappy silty water extremely well and lights up your dive like a film set.

4. And the beam spread? Well its focusable but the ring is uneven which is the only downside to the light. However for a few more £££ you can have the EKPP reflector which apparently turns it into a torch you could use to spot V2's in WW2.

5. What about the finish? Beautiful. If kiftondle.co.uk made torch housings, I would make them like this. Makes you want to sob uncontrollably and take them to bed with you. The removable head leaves a hole you can actually get your penis into (ask Digger about that one).

6. And the price? Well 600 odd quid is a whole load of cash. But comparatively they are cheap compared to an equivalent Halcyon which seeing as they are almost identical (even the battery charger is the same) it would seem madness, madness I tell you to go down the H route.

7. And in the pub? Definitely something to show off with. And cheaper than a D9.

I've got the EKPP reflector on mine and I'd be interested in seeing a side by side comparison.
