LED definately. I have a FAMI and its bang on and less susceptable to breaking the very expensive bulb if you bang it.

Thumbs up LED torches

My buddy, who uses a 30 watt HID and I were comparing the new Fa&Mi Power 70 and Power 90 LED torches yesterday at Mary's. I would highly recommend either of them, but the Power 70 was astonishing value! 5000 to 6000 kelvin burn temperature and very long burn time. We tried all three in their pool in the dark and then in the night air (you can do that with LED torches - no worries about overheating). The Power 70 was the best for your money by my reckoning. I don't know anywhere else it is stocked though. Have a look at www.divetorch.co.uk. It's a small outfit but very friendly and worth a look.

Jack.

A couple of points not alredy raised.
HID is the best for light penetration, but how much do you love your HID when you've had to go through two or more HID elements??
I wont shift from HID but it sucks when you have to pay £100 for your replacement Allyn Welch, know what I mean?
By the way, dont think your super bright LED torches will last forever, Luxeon star LED's dont have a lifespan much longer than a standard halogen under most applications.

Just another 2cents.

BTW. I use a Kohr systems Bright boy which has a goodman handled head unit with a 20w halogen beside a 10w MR11-C HID element. Its umbilical to a 5hr NiMH battery pack. Cant decide whether the operational switch is cool or not, its a peizo element cast in the front. You tap it for on or off,
tap 1 halogen 50%, tap 2 halogen 100%, tap 3 Halogen 100% with HID, Double tap is off.

You can see it on full power in my avatar.
