Rechargeable Batteries

Hopefully not too silly a question....

Can I use NiMH batteries in a dive torch?

I am just slightly concerned as to the effect of any potential hydrogen venting in a sealed unit at pressure. Is there a danger of the torch exploding?

Other than that I assume it's going to have to be Nicad until I can afford the necessary rechargeable battery pack.

Yes Stewbi

You can, and most of us do, use NiMH batteries in dive torches. If there is any "venting" it is absolutely minimal and will make no difference whatsoever.

Use the high capacity ones to get better burn times.

Just remember that Nimh are only 1.2 volt whereas Alkalines etc are 1.5 volt. While this doesn't sound much of a difference, it is compounded when you have mutiple cells.

ie, a torch that uses 4 cells will be running at 1.2 volts less when using rechargeables than it is when using alkalines, and it does have an impact on bulb brightness.

Also bear in mind the fact that rechargeables have a very flat discharge curve, so give up the ghost quite suddenly compared to alkalines.

That all said, I wouldn't be without rechargeables.

True, but alkalines tend to drop from 1.5V to 1.2V quite quickly, flatten out for a while & then decline to 0, so the NiMH at 1.2V are acceptable replacements in most cases.

E-Bay

Got some 5Ahr C-cells for my UK C4 on E-bay. Most of the ones normally obtainable are half that. Well 1p for the batteries 11.99 for the p&P......From Hong Kong ! With a 10Watt bulb makes the C4 a 'reasonable' torch.

Regards
Nick
