Solus 1000W LED Torch Kit Test

Hi Mark,

Good independant report sir, with nice pics and video for comparison.

The SOLUS 1000 does what it says on the tin and is a very solid reliable piece of dive kit.

The feedback I take from your review would lead me to include a Goodman handle and a battery mounting case with the SOLUS 1000 package................Done!!

The price you quoted is RRP (860) and higher than the 800 Stg divertec sells the SOLUS 1000 for this price will now also include the Goodman Handle and Battery Mounting Case, standard postage is of course already included.

I will dig out some video from the dive show with the SOLUS being used for breaking walnuts and post a link.

SOLUS manufacture video lights that are 50% more powerfull than the SOLUS 1000 for broadcast quality filming or you could fit a diffusser to the 1000 for every day filming.

Regards

Barrie

Excellant review Mark and some great comments by others here. I also have a SOLUS 1000 and have yet to get it wet. It is a solid piece of kit.

I noticed on Solus's FAQ page that they are working on a 6 degree version beam as an option over the standard 12 degree version. This might sort out the lack of light sabre effect!

SOLUS Submersible Products - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Quoted from the FAQ....

Quote:
Q. I'm a cave diver and I can see the advantages that LED lighting has over HID. But in cave diving we use the primary lamp for signalling a lot. The 12 degree beam is too wide for this. Are you going to do a 6 degree or focusing version ?

A. We are currently working on a 6 degree version. We expect to be able to offer this as an option in the near future. We are not looking at a focusing version at the moment.

Great thread.

Excellent report, couple of simple problems which when read by the seller are immediately sorted.

I reckon once they get the focus sorted they might even persuade the Dark Side too. Make a smaller non-umbilical version and you'll get club divers to cough up cash for it too. £200 max.

Thumbs up

Barry,

I also think it would be a good move to add the Goodman handle and bolt snap as standard to all torches given the price.

Further all that is required - IMO - to make the 'Solus Goodman Handle' good is to replace the machined cradle with a stainless steel jubilee clip. It'll be cheaper and more secure than the current model.

I have added an old CD handle to my SR-500 and it works a treat.

Just my 2p

Excellent Mark, great report. Pitty you had no walnuts! But I broke a the rear window in a car on a dive with me recently so tis tough.

Ya the handle seems a good idea Barry, I must invest in one for my 1000 when I can afford it.

So, the Southern English man looks for some walnuts to test the durability of his torch and the Irish bloke just smashes a car window in with his.

It's got to say something that!

Barrie, be very careful who you let demo the torch in Irish dive shows.

Potential Customer: "I am worried that the torch will get beaten up a bit on wreck dives, and the bulbs will break"

Solus: "It's not a problem sir, lets just go out to the car park and let me demonstrate how tough this torch is"
