travelling with a dive torch

Hi Guys

What’s the score on travelling with a dive torch? Can it be taken as hang luggage or does it have to go in the hold ( do the battery’s have to be removed too?), just wondering as going to Sharm next month, and not sure with all the new security changes / checks.

Cheers

Gavin

So far, I have had no problems carrying regs, lights, computers as hand luggage. The only thing that I had to do was to turn on the light to show it worked.

When travelling with a torch I .....NOW.... always take the batteries out and reverse them so there is no chance of the torch switching on accidentally even if the torch has a lock.

I say now, as I learnt about this from experience. I took a small diving torch on a non-diving camping trip and when we got to our destination, I had a very warm rucksack .... and a slighlty melted lens......

Wink Travelling with torch

I always carry my Salvo in the hand luggage - never had any problems. In Feb on the way through Doah (Quatar) airport large security guy did point at my rucksack containg Rebreather cannister, electronics,VR3 and torch and said "looks like bomb" in broken English, All I had to do was open it up show him & it was fine - some of the other travellers looked nervous though

Oh yes - if going through the States and taking it handluggage dont say, like a mate of mine did at the security check, "I've got a torch in there".

Torch means something different over there (think oxycetelene.... which they will most definitely allow you to take on a plane)

Lantern or light is what you should say.

After a couple of nervous moments - the security guys did see the funny side of it.... otherwise it would have been out with the rubber gloves for my mate )

Beware about torches in the states

We went to Mexico to Cenote dive in January 2007. I had no problem taking my Light Cannon and battery with me as hand luggage from Glasgow to Newark. In Newark, we checked in luggage. But.............going thru the handbaggage check in Newark the guy says 'you can't take this with you' - meaning my Lightcannon battery.

So had to go back to the check in desk, get a box from Continental and check in the battery as checked luggage. It came out fine the other end. So alls well that ends well.

There is great diving in the Cenotes.
