Canister torch O-Rings?

Hi,

Have a shiny new Salvo which is brighter than the sun and I've been feasting on bbq'd fish since I got it, but I have a question, as I've never owned such a torch before.

Should I be greasing the o-ring on the canister? Haven't so far and no leaks (max depth 33m for the torch so far)

I've never used grease.

I usually run a wet finger around the O ring and the top of the canister before putting the lid on.

Now and again I'll take the O ring off and give it a rinse and wipe the flange on the lid with a damp cloth.

I asked Woz about this, him being an expert on seals and things. And he said that the o-ring on a torch cannister isn't really behaving as an o-ring - it's the force of the catches that seal that cannister.

Consequently it doesn't really need to be lubed.

Mmm, the catches may seal the canister on the surface, but I bet if you go down to 30m the catches will wobble and won't provide any restraining force at all.

I still have a Clearcam housing which works on this premise, take it 15m and you could undo the catches and the lid would stay on because the water pressure is holding the lid on not the catches.

So to the OP, you don't need to lube it, just make sure that it is clean and fitting well.

Son, you're going to have to make up your mind about growing up and becoming aircrew. You can't do both.

The aircraft limits are only there in case there is another flight by that particular aircraft. If subsequent flights do not appear likely, there are no limits.

I remember being told the lube on O-rings just lets them move. The movement is needed to let them slide into the best sealing position. When it was explained to me it was very easy to understand not like my explanation :-).

along the lines of, grease attracts dirt so dont use it.

clean it dry it, clean all around it, let the compression do the rest
