I've just come back from florida diving at 40 fathom grotto and used one of these on 5 dives or so. very nice with penetrating beam. at 40 fathom its black below 30m.

The first pictures are the Salvo the second is the Dive Rite LED....no, the first pictures are the LED the second is the Salvo.....no, I was right the first time.

Exept the LED one is to$$ with some 3w LED's and the 10W salvo is ace and will melt your mates retina's.

Nope....Dive Rite say the 500 lumen LED is as bright as a 10watt HID and as they make both I am inclined to believe them.

ps DiveRite made a handheld 10Watt HID. It was discontinued June 1st 2007.

Id like to see a side by side or a independant test not just a "dive rite say test".

LED,s just aint as bright. ( yet).

Me too. I suspect that the total light output may be similar but the HID will be more focused. So with a HID you get a narrow bright spot. With the LED you get a wider, not quite as bright beam.

Being a sceptical sort I assumed Dive Rite withdrew their 10Watt handheld HID about the same time as they launched their 500 lumen LED because someone said 'we ain't going to sell that at that price with the LED on the market.'
If they really were that different why stop selling the HID?
