Couple of comments on torches

I agree that the Princeton Tec Surge does give off a surprisingly powerful beam for such a small light. However I have had two break on me so far.... the first one flooded and the on/off switch snapped on the second. Thankfully they come with a lifetime warranty so you can get them replaced.

A torch I would recommend is the Ikelite C-lite 8. This is a very nicely made torch for the price. I managed to get one brand new off ebay for something like £45.

<font color='#000080'>I've got a Peli light 8 D cell with twin filament bulb from RS components (75 quid + VAT) that does the trick nicely and can be used to beat off attackers and sledgehammer rocks apart. Very similar to the UK offering, I believe and cheaper as it's an industrial light that also happens to be waterproof to a zillion feet (or whatever it is) rather than priced to rip off in your LDS.

Keep your eyes posted here for the Woz-sabre- an umbilical for men with hairy chests (and backs). Grrrr.

Mark,

I made my replacement battery for my Cutom Divers ST1 umbilical, using bits from Maplin. All the battery consists of is a Yuasa ‘NP’ sealed lead acid and some clips and duct tape. Much cheaper than the custom quote.

I have a UK Light Cannon and its brilliant; one piece of advice though... don't leave it in the car overnight... the bulbs don't like getting cold and are £60ish to replace!

Ratbag
If youre wallet can't be stretched to an umbilical, have a look at a UK Sunlight D4 rechargable,( twin bulbs) £80 &amp; spares reasonably priced.  Have a look at http://divebox.co.uk/.

I tried this but the bateries worked out nearley as expensive to get loose as they were to get as a ready made kit. Also I couldent get exactly the same bateries which was anoying.

If I remember corectly I saved about £15 so it wasent worth it. Mind you the bateries were the same as the CD ones NMHD thingyes.

I'll go with that, I've had three (one got nicked and I bought the same again) and think for general UK diving and night dives they are a goob balance between poor lights at £30/£40 and the realy good stuff at £250+. Also look at size, the UK8DR is a bigger better torch - but for my dives it's heavy and not realy required. Try buddying folk with different ones or try and borrow a couple and take them to a dark place like Porgs phychi.

Pesonally i'd bite the bullet and get a cheap umbilical, i got the greenforce arrow 12 for £250, with the view of upgrading the lighthead to the HID later on.

Its a great torch and you haven't got the weight or size of a big hand held torch. Thats one of the prime reasons i got an umbilical.
