HiD Vs LED - Where are we today?

An interesting debate has been raging over on another forum about where we are today with LED technology and it's application in the primary diving light market. Many of us believe that LED is a very promising technology which will almost certainly catch up with and overtake HiD; but we ain't there yet. Others believe that the latest LED lights can not only match the very best of today's Primary HiDs in terms of performance but also bring other benefits in terms of bulb life and burn time.

Barry at Salvo has posted some rather compelling photo's demonstrating head to head performance which I thought I'd post on here and let people make up their own minds:

I registered especially to read that as i think LED's have come a long way but have a good few years before they catch up to a decent HID then i saw the photos of this so called all singing only light you will ever need solus compared to a 21w salvo ( a light i keep looking at longingly ) and i have a question was the all singing Solus actually turned on just shows that they're claims are shite if i'd spent close to a grand to find out solus would have had me knocking on the door for my money back

Very good pics. There is only really a comparison on the 10 Watt HID handheld. After that there's quite a clear difference. Certainly will make my life easier when I come to choose a torch!

Interesting photo's

Am i the only one who can see a difference with all the Solus images? considering its meant to be the same in each photo?

FWIW i have a SU-1000 and I'm VERY pleased with its performance.

I assumed that was something to do with the auto balancing on the camera taking the photo. i.e the Salvo's are changing so there is a different amount of contrast that the camera is having to process...

Yeah I was going to say the same thing. You can see the light on the LED getting slightly darker on each photo from 21 Watt HID comparison down, which I guess would be as the HID is getting brighter.
