Thanks guys, I must say the Sartek looks like a good deal. Now what else would be a good buy while I'm over there ?

Very straight forward to do ,You do have the import duty (£60 approx) but even with that a very good price. even with this still cheaper than from the UK It only took four days from ordering it to delivery If you are in the states even better with the pound/dollar exchange rate at present.
According to the site they use the Welch Allyn bulb though which doesn't seem to have a particularly good reputation for reliability.

I've had a Dive Rite 10W HID for about 6mths, I've had no bother with it. It survived being shipped across the Atlantic, rattling around the back of my car and being dragged around in a tackle sack. I've had an equally badly reputed WA 18W for about three years, again no trouble.

I've got a Dive Rite 10W handheld, absolutely brilliant, about the size of a fat Scout and cheap as well if you've got some leftover cash. I think it came to about 160quid (1.5-2hr burn with a decent set of NiMH batteries).

Cheers,

Stuart

I would agree with Stuart, my last HID used the Welch Allyn bulb and in six years of cave diving (and the carry to the sump) it only had one light unit fail.
The Dive rite battery pack is really nice so small it just sits out of the way on a dive.

Andrew.

I have had a Sartek for about 10 years - 18W HID.

It has had a hard life and it still works - never had problems with the head although the batteries have needed changes.

I don't think Sartek is an inferior option.

So you've see a Sartek in the flesh then Dave? Or is this just speculation? If you have a Salvo I'm wiiling to meet at a dive site to compare torches.
