A big thank you to WWD for lending me his CD 10w HID. Dived twice today at Stoney and was very impressed. May now be on the look out for one of these.
The 10w was plenty bright enough. We dropped in to the stanny hold and it illuminated the whole thing.

I know what you mean. We did the Alex van Orpstal out of Weymough this weekend and I was absolutely blown away with the quality of the light. Hard to believe I had a UK C8 for years and thought it was good enough.

Good luck in the search for your torch and you can always pm Phil or Amanda at Nakkers to see what the non-focus 10w Salvo retails at. It might not be (too) far out of your budget

There are probably better choices.

This was an unusually bad experience. I have dived a Proteus 3 for five years down to 105m and its still on its original bulb. Andyps was the same. Both have taken a lot of abuse over the years.

Apart from this one incident (and that was on a different can) I don't know of any one else with issues on the Proteus 3

There are rust problems on the SS with old units but I got a PM from Casey the other day to tell me they have switched to brass for the glands to avoid the issue.

At the time the 3 had the cheapest batteries and the cheapest bulbs of any HID. I don't know if it still is but I know the batteries can be purchased for less than £20. Bulbs were £65 last time I looked.

Of the list you put up its the one id choose.

Can batteries still be bought so cheaply now that H has installed the new Explorer style attachments on the Proteus

Just change the connectors if it's a big problem. That said, the batteries from Halcyon for SLA are more expensive but not extortionate.

My experiences with the Pro 3 have been nothing but good. It's just kept working and working (when I remember to charge it up) and I can see it continuing to keep working and working for a long time. Fits neatly on the side of my backplate and has only failed from me breaking the cable, caused by misuse. I wouldn't go for a more expensive Halcyon torches, seen a lot of problems with other models, but not with this one. Doesn't have the focus which used to focus into the blub and break it, doesn't flood, doesn't really ever stop working. Which is nice, because it's had a hell of a kicking in several different configurations and directions in the last few years.

Digs.

My Proteus 3 is a bit like Trigger's broom. There aren't many original parts left on it!

I have been through new bulb, battery, switch, cable and ballast!

I basically have a love-hate relationship with it (currently in the love category as it has just been fixed).
