Greenforce flexi Funstar

Yes, it sounds like a contortionist pole dancer. But does it cut through murk enough to use as a primary?

Please don't recommend stupidly expensive cannister lights, I can't afford one right now, just want to know if anyone has one of these and if it does the job?

Thanks in advance xx

Edit... searching the forum suggests it's only light enough for a back up.

The major plus point of Greenforce Torches is that they are modular.
So you can convert this to an umblical with just the addition of the umbilical cable when your budget allows (£77?).

Then at some point in the future you could upgrade the lighthead (maybe when another YD'er is selling one) and then you could change the battery pack over.

I haven't used that particular torch but I did like the modular greenforce approach.

Id guess the downside is that the flexi funstar I think uses AA batteries and is not itself a rechargeable pack.

i have a star LED lighthead that i use for shallow dives in the UK (upto 40m) and for use abroad. The fun is the battery pack and the star the lighthead.

I have it attached to my umbilical that i have a HID100 head that i use for deep gas diving in the UK, but is total over kill for shallow dives or abroad. So this is why i purchased and use the star head.

The star head is excatly what comes with the fun star, the only difference is that as i said i attach mine to the FII pack and umbilical as opposed to the fun pack that contains normal batteries.

I have used my star down to 100m abroad and also at 90m in some caves. it does the job ok, and for shallow UK stuff it is all you really need. It is quite bright (not far off my HID head in brightness terms) the only differnce is that the spot is small in comparison to my wopper of a HID, think sum ut like this size difference . .

It does the job, and for dives like UK sea at 30m or stoney etc etc it is fine. And again is fine for red sea night dives etc.

here is a pic of me coming out of a cave at 62m in the red sea using the star head, it will give you an idea of brighness and spot size:-

hope it helps

That's helpful, thanks. My diving in the UK is limited to relatively shallow dives (not more than 35 metres). I have an old Beaver LED rechargable. It seemed to cost a fortune at £180 8 years ago! It only has a burn time of an hour with a 50w bulb and it has seen better days. I've read as many reviews as I can find on the Funstar and it seems OK fr the kind of diving I do. Really just wanted some confirmation that it was OK because it is a good price and has a long burn time.

The long burntime is another reason i purchased it for holiday diving...no charger needed for week long red sea trips sum ut mad like 900mins with my FII battery pack.

As i said it is good enough, ive used it in dotty at 50m before now a few times. And at first i thought shit this is no good (as any one who dives dotty knows 50m is a dark place) but the time your eyes adjust etc it was fine. It's bright the only down side is the spot is small compared to the monster torches out there nowadays. But i am happy with it for shallow stuff or gas dives abroad as these big HID's are over kill for that type off stuff.

I like it, the light head is small and neat and is plenty bright enough to read guages, to point things out with etc etc.

im off to Dahab next week to do sum gas dives in the 80-120m region, blue hole etc etc. The HID head will be staying at home and the star will be in my kit bag for that one. Im off in the garage in a bit to get my stuff ready for a splash tomorrow, ill take a pic of the spot size and brighness for you to give you an idea.

some pics for you to compare and get a better idea:-

All pics taken in a pitch black garage.

Pic lit by the star head

Same lit by normal dive torch

Spot beam comparison (the white light is the star/yellow conventional)

the two torches together

hope it gives you a better idea, it passed 15mins of my evening and better than watching corry

That'll do! Thank you for missing Corrie and getting cold in your garage!

I have been faffing for ages trying to decide yey or nay. So it's yey. I'll get one ordered tomorrow.

Thank you very much. xxx
