You are correct.
Having dug out the instructions, from when I bought the AA12 and head, point number 4 says
" If you have purchased an umbilical torch you must charge through the umbilical sleeve"

Of course I hadn't purchased an umbilical then and didn't get one until a year later. However, I treat it with kids gloves and am confident the battery is currently fine as the torch appears to work ok without the umbilical

hello andrew of course we get the odd friday afternoon or monday morning problems.but in general we do not get many problems touch wood.we have been selling them for 8 years now in the uk and they have proved durable and can stand up to all types of diving.
the charging issue only exists on the older arrow 12 torches where overa period of time eg 2 years the batteries can compress in the tube if you charge it straight into the tube especially if you are heavy handed like most of us are, like already has been said thanks everyone a simple tap washer underneath your battery will sort it out.
the f 2 f 3 f 4 and aa 12 can be charged either through the umbilical or straight into the battery pack no problems.

if anyone needs to know anything else or needs any advice do not hesitate to contact me i will be more than happy to assist you.

cheers
rob

My FII battery pack doesn't always charge, it does if I charge it and disconnect as soon as the charge light goes green. It seems to discharge while on trickle charge, whereas my FIII has no issues at all.

Once charged the FII will run for as long as its supposed to, if left to trickle for to long it won't even start the bulb!!
