From a small sample of users i have found the Halcyon 10W Protius 3 (I have two of these) is an excellent and totaly reliable torch. I am however aware of one person who had a nightmare with his but the other five i am aware off have all been rock solid.

I know two people with Halcyon 18W torches and both suffered bulb problems and one had multiple floods one first dive back from repair.

Halcyons customer service is excellent but he got rid because he lost faith, the other fella swapped to a Salvo lid and head for his torch. Problems with Halcyon 18W bulbs failing were common a couple of years ago but i haven't herd much recently. Mind you i hardly ever see a halcyon 18W torch these days unless on a GUE diver, pretty much every one I know is on the Salvo.

My 21W Salvo was one of the first in the UK. It had a bulb problem and upgrade within six months of purchase but since then i have never needed my spare bulb. Its failed on me a few times always because of dodgy contacts between head and battery. My original contacts were perfect but they snapped off all the problems have been with the new ones. Its possibly my fault because i dive the torch inverted.

Customer service from Salvo has been excellent.

Looking at the latest torches I am impressed by the dry lid on the Halcyon and that might convince me to spend a few more pounds. However my primary interest at the moment is the latest tek in LED torches. The New Salvo LED would be at or near the top of my shopping list. I am still waiting for the product test on them to decide on weather or not to go for one.
I am diving with a Solus 1250 at the moment and I prefer the way it lights up the wreck to the HIDs I also like the head mounted switch.
Only problems with Solus is lack of UK support and the cost.

My personal torch recomendations at the momnet basse on what i have had direct experiance with would be:

10W Protius 3 halcyon (£350-£390 for a fantastic torch is amazing value)

21W Salvo (Expensive but still a good price for a 21W HID if thats what you want. Its tried and tested product. Contact issues are minor)

I think you can just get unlucky torches. I had a Halcyon Proteus 3 that averaged a bulb every dive trip, btu i know someone that treats theirs with utter contempt, reguarly drops his kit on it, and yet it has never failed once.

Equally I went through two or three savlos that were just a bag of shit until Phil sorted me out with the current one which, again, has never failed me, despite me driving over the cable, dropping my twinset on it, the usual etc

I think there's just not enough made of them, by any brand, to ensure quality standards are as high as they could be with a higher output. although they are all great torches, every now and again you get a duff one. they also have to stand up to a hell of a lot of abuse, and by and large do a bloody good job of doing so.
