Halcyon or Salvo

Hi All,
Need a bit of quick advice. Brian Allen is shipping me a order Thursday and I need to make a decision on whether to ask him to include a Halcyon HID or go for a Nackers Salvo.

I know that the Halcyon has NiMH batteries and the Salvo Li-Ion and there is a price difference, but apart from that, what would be the torch or choice –

Halcyon Explorer HID 18w with 9amp battery, or

Salvo Havoc 21w with 10 amp batteries.

It’s got to be one of those two unless somebody can make a very convincing argument for a 35w (and offer me a place to stay for a couple of days when SWMBO finds out!).

Will soon be selling a Metalsub HID126 (Purchased Nov ‘07) with 9amp battery (March ‘08) and 4amp travel battery (Nov ’07) when I get this so PM me if interested…looking in region of £700 ono.

Cheers,

Graham

Thanks Colin, now edited (But as you have used this torch you could vouch for the fact that the condition looks like it was purchased in November '08

My Halcyon has been the most unreliable torch I've ever had. I've since rebuilt it with a Salvo head, switch, boot and gland from old AUL spares and sealed just about every joint bar the lid with Aquasure. It now works but has turned into Trigger's broom.

I'd go for the Salvo, the 21W HID is extremely nice, better bulb than the Welch Allyn 18W and very noticeably brighter underwater.

Cheers,

Stuart

As Graham has said I actually borrowed this torch from him & sat it alongside my Custom Divers 18w Hid .It is a lovely torch with a nice beam & more blue/white light than my CD one . It is in superb condition & graham is a genuine guy .

I'm Biased. But then I tend to sell things that I believe in.

Voted for the Halcyon

IMO - just a few of the reasons
  • The build quality is better. - noticable when you take them apart
  • The bulbs are the same brightness underwater
  • You have less flicker with the Halcyon
  • The Dry Lid is a true Dry Lid design rather than double cable glands both of which may leak.
  • Halcyons are ALL pressure tested (152m) before they leave the factory

regards

The 21W is border line unnessary but great to have the 35W is truley unnessary.

Theres not much diference between the 18w and the 21W.

I understood that the new Halcyons were using the same bulb as the Salvos?

The origional 18W Halcyon was awfull, breaking loads of bulbs and flooding. The more modern ones I understand are fine.

For me it would come down to cost or brand preferance as the two products are so simila.

yup, I'd agree with all of this. I'd end up getting the 21W salvo, I've been really happy with mine.

The newer Halcyons have a slightly shorter "umbilical" which was odd to start with but I snag it less on stage cylinders which is a minor point but may be relevant.

The electrical connection on the Halcyon is vastly upgraded, compared to the original Salvo but I don't know whether that too has also been upgraded.
