Umbilical routing

What is the best way of routing the umbilical cable for a torch?

I have the canister on the harness waistbelt and the head is clipped on to the right-side D ring but the cable just dangles! Not neat and something of a snag hazard.

What is the best configuration for this? Any help would be appreciated.

You could tuck it in to your waist belt when you aren't using it.

Yep, tuck it under the waistbelt but make sure you don't trap the long hose. The next question, is how long do you have the torch clipped off for? Long time, stow the cord, short time, can't be bothered!!

Son, you're going to have to make up your mind about growing up and becoming aircrew. You can't do both.

The aircraft limits are only there in case there is another flight by that particular aircraft. If subsequent flights do not appear likely, there are no limits.

On my single, I strap the battery pack to my cylinder and route the umbilical over my shoulder and down an arm. The torch head has both a Goodman handle (used to be a snoopy loop) that I can put round my left hand, and also a clip so can clip this to a shoulder D-ring when I don't need it.

On my twins, I tuck the battery pack in my wing bungee and again route it over my shoulder and Goodman handle onto my hand.

I have my canister clipped to my right hand side of my backplate using two split rings to which I attach two small bolt snaps. The cable comes out of the top of the canister up behind my right shoulder and over the top of my wing routed at this point through a plastic hose clip thingy and the head is then clipped off on one of my D rings. Hope this makes sense but it does work and is streamlined with no dangly cable.
Cheers Zaf

Two dog clips...

If you are wearing your canister on your right one simple solution that works well is to cable tie a second dog-clip to the umbilical cable at the right height that allows you to clip it to your right shoulder D-ring. A second clip on the head for clipping it off when not in use.

This ensures that the cable is neatly routed across your body from the canister to your left hand when torch is in use and means that if you don't want to clip the head off whilst you are doing something (ie drop it) then the head is only a little way beneath you.

Just my opinion - but it's simple and works

Hugh

Sounds simple. I'll give it a try.

Main thing is tidying up for water entry/ascents when the torch is not in use, but when you are most likely to be doing something (like sending a blob up or getting in!!) that you could tangle with.

Hope it works for you - being able to safely dangle the head does, at times, make life easier and the mid-cable clip will keep the umbilical out of the way.

Hugh
