Question Why Li-Ion Batteries on Salvo LED's ?

Help....have e.mailed divingniknaks for advice but no reply, so can anyone advise.......
Looking for an umbilical torch and as Salvo seem to get decent reviews, decided on a 10W HID.........BUT see they now have LED so thinking seriously about 12W LED.
However, see LED units have Li-Ion batteries, when HID's have swapped over to NiMH type, which seem to get better press. Any ideas why?
Are Li-Ion harder to charge or need more care than NiMH ?
Just seems a retrograde step to me, but I'm no expert !!
Sensible advice much appreciated

hmm,

The progression actually went - SLA (Sealed Lead Acid) - NiMH to Li-Ion.

NiMH are a technology with a finite life, they don't dig the stuff out of the ground any more; hence the change.

Somebody will be along in a mo to tell you that Li-ion bursts into flames on contact with salt water. That's bollocks. That technology is the future.

Li-ion should have any memory effect as in you can charge them whenever you like with little or no effect on the cells the downside being they don't generally last as long as NiMH because of a steeper discharge curve but to get the best results out of NiMH they are better fully discharged before charging now i have had a beer and may be mixing up NiMH with NiCD but from memory Li-ion are better than both

you are confusing NiMH with NiCD, NiCD's have the pronounced memory effect.

BTW could you please change your avatar sparky, i'm slowly becoming hypnotised.....i must look away, i must resist........hmmmmm bouncy

you are right that LI-ION is the best, they have much higher capacity for their size and weight ( i also heard that NiMH wasnt going to be sold any more??)

You also have to bear in mind that LI-ION batterys have a limited life, whether you use them or not( 2 - 3 yrs ), so expect a flood of three year old HIDs cheap .

Li ion has no memory, whereas NiMh does, and has a greater energy density which means a smaller battery pack for a given burn time in comparison to NiMh and SLA.

All rechargeable battery packs have a limited life, Li ion packs contain a circuit to ensure a proper charge. And there is various literature on the net saying they should be kept cool and best long term performance comes from keeping them at 30% charge.

Hence the move to Li Ion. This is the common type of battery pack now used in most laptops.

The advantage of the 12w is you can also use the small hand held salvo battery pack to take it holiday if you do not want to take the umbilical. Mind you the 12w battery pack is very small in comparison to other torches.

Hope this helps.

Li Ion is the future and most battery have a limited of charge and discharge usually around 1000 cycles so they should last.
