Jon lines in strong currents.

I've been thinking about jon lines a bit, mainly because of the blown out dive I was going to do with Paul in the Dover shipping lane where coming up the shot is a must.

Anyway, if there is a strong current, the shotline won't be vertical, but will be at an angle. If you clip on your jon-line, won't the end start to slide up the shot? Dragging you with it?

Can you counter-act this by wrapping it round the shot a few types so that the end is fixed. Or can you make your self slightly negative, to balance out the "pulling up" effect of the jon-line.

Hope the question makes sense.

Janos

Firstly , mate ,,,

Where we were going to be today, you could have ' bagged off '. ( so to speak, )

What i have in my wasit pouch is , dammmmm dare i say it ?

Is a figure of 8, can be bought at any good camping shop that does climbing or fast roping.

all you do is loop a short loop of shotline though one of the holes and back it over the back of the fig of 8 ... then clip my SMB reel to the open hole.

Mine is similar to the second one down

No , I don't have a spare or will give out info to where i got it.

Those clever mods will be able to merge the threads. You watch. In a few hours there will be a seemless integration.

Andy - I think I understand what you're saying about the figure of eight - is there ever a problem with the current being too strong to get any slack in the rope?

Gareth - Do you mean an "R-clip" One of these If so I'd be interested to see the photos as to how it attaches.

I was thinking of using a loop of bungee as a Prussik kot and then clipping my webbing line on to that.

Janos,

I use about 1.5m of climbing accesory cord with a handloop tied in one end and a krab on the other. I clip it on and let it hang free. You don't move up letting it run free, simple physics: you have an upward force generated by the tide and the angle of the shot line so you just adjust your trim at your stop to be slightly negative, it cancels out the upward force that tries to push you up. I can stay completely static on a freely running jon line. There is absolutely no need for any friction devices. The whole point of a jon line is to give yourself some elbow room, if you use a hook, figure-8 or whatever then it means shoving everyone out the way to change depth. Totally unnecessary.

Give a free running krab a go, you'll be surprised.

If this works there will be a picture

One of these. they are springy enough to open up with one hand but lock into the shot line quite snuggly

Brilliant thing to have when you are doing flag impressions on a shot, or when the shot is crowded!

As I said earlier, you can make do with a reel, but this will slip up & down.

Not Dead Yet

Yeah, if you are on a crowded shot jon line or no, you need to give a bit of consideration all round.

(unless you want a bang on the head from a stage to remind you of your manners!)

Hi.

If it is running that fast it blows you back up the shot line, somebody has got the tides wrong, you would have to have learned your skills at the Garth school of diving.

keep pumping that iron it sounds like you might need it!.
