BSAC Ocean Diver Exam

Hi all,

Just taken my BSAC OD Exam and passed it first time, although some of the questions were very controversial, something that annoyed me a little though was that 3 out of 5 of us passed, now the 2 that failed had to sit with the DO and go through the questions, they then had to agree that they understood why they got the questions wrong .......... and then DO passed them.

Seems to make a mockery of the exam really.

Any thoughts ?

Stu.

Hmm, but on the other hand, by talking to the instructor and clarifying the correct answer/procedure, haven't they gained understanding?

Yes.

I have done similar. A couple(!) of the questions suffer from being badly written.

I have had borderline cases involving these questions. When I have asked the question verbally, and not given the list of possible answers, I have got the right answer. I have then passed the candidate. This is a 1 maybe 2 question issue. If a candidate has got all the tables stuff wrong in this way, they do another test, and so on.

Asking questions verbally is important IMO. Don't assume the candidate does not have Dyslexia or the numeric equivalent.

I would not pass someone who now understood why they had got 10 questions wrong.

Adrian

Thats how TDI do it. With Padi you have to resit the exam pass 75% the ones you get wrong the instructor goes through wth you.

I was one question short of the minimum 25 that was required to pass and I was given the opportunity to verbally go through the ones I got incorrect and passed. 2 others in my group got more questions wrong and was allowed to go through a verbal question and answer session to assist with learning and they were asked to re-sit exam at a later date.
Thats one of the benefits of BSAC one doesnt have to repay to re-sit an exam unlike others, so I have been told.

I've no real problem with this. I see it as more important that the candidate understands the pronciple than gets the right answer to the wrong question (if you follow my logic). :-)

Not sure about 'the others' but you don't pay for a resit with PADI.

Incorrect exam answers indicate areas that need further study/explanation/help. Surely the idea is to bring students upto a level where they can pass - thought that was the purpose of the course.

What are 'controversial' questions ?

It has to be said that the answers to some of the questions in some BSAC exams are just plain wrong!!

Thats not bad...... The SAA club I was with everyone failed the elementary diver multiple choice questions. Which said alot about the instructors.
