Picture this, bunch of guys decide to start diving, buy the kit read the books and give it a go. Who is going to come after them, the dive police?

You may be asked to show certs on boats or at dive centres, so but your own boat and get stuck in.

What do you think happens when you out grow the agencies, which does happen?

DAN will insure you in certain instances but your on your own, live with it. Now were did I put my Everest insurance policy?

I did the TDI adv nitrox and deco course a few months ago and diving more and outside my uni club. however, I still enjoy club trips and going back to single tank diving every now and again, off to the farns this weekend. Think you can have the best of both worlds

This is a good plan and fully what I intend to do.

Now there must be some more courses that haven't been mentioned yet.........

Don't get me wrong, I'm still a member of my local BSAC, luckily there are some good divers there, we have a spot on trimix blending house and still have a good crack though I don't go down as often now.

But some clubs are simply not set up for the kind of diving we all like, I bet there are some clubs well into photography, but that's not for me.

Like you say the uni clubs have a high turn around. If you want to get out and do some active diving, not just Vobster, Stoney and Crap'N'Pay then you "may" be better off joining a local branch.

I say may because I know a couple of uni clubs that are quite heavy wreck divers, an lets face it, that should be the only reason you need to progress to depth, not to collect badges, cave diving excluded.

I am lucky enough to belong to one of these more salt than quarry for sure even though I do love Vobster and would much rather spend a day there than have a sh1tty short sea dive if the weather/vis is marginal.

Anyway back to courses and depths - IANTD?(Thanks Ian) GUE? Anyone?

My uni club is great, and includes quite a few people who are willing to do some slightly deeper stuff. But the high turn over means there are always new people to teach and i think teaching is probably the best way to make sure your own basic skills are 100%. Think my next step is to do the BSAC OWI course and spent a year or so working on getting my basic skills perfect before doing a trimix course in a couple of years time.

Adv Nitrox actually gets u to 45m as well - just no deco unless done with deco procs.

Nope.

I do training because I want to learn things. On my last couple of courses I didn't even know what agency they were doing until the time came to fill in the forms. I chose the instructor. I never bothered to ask what that card 'qualified' me to do.
