I am obviously failing to see for what reason I would sue BSAC if I dive to 50m on air and have an incident.
I don't disagree with you at all Fiona but I'd be willing bet if you spoke to the various agencies about why they restrict depths and put stepped progression (where previously none existed) the (real) reason would be fear of litigation..
You might have to threaten them with the liar liar pants on fire routine but I bet that's the true reason.

It's not BSAC itself who'd be getting sued in case of an incident, it'd probably be the buddy, the DO, and whoever was marshalling the dive. All of whom are covered for that sort of thing under the BSAC third-party liability insurance, as I understand it.

Its been touted for ages but never happened. They'll either have to make a "new "DL syllabus so only newly qualified DLs get the restriction or create a rule that will piss off thousands of current dive leaders who will just ignore the rule anyway.

Rumour was its to do with them trying to push their new trimix quals so reduce the AIR depth only. Again though if they do that it'll just be widely ignored. On the grand scale of things far more people in clubs are diving 35-50m on air than they are on trimix for various reasons - cost being a main one.

Is the Scottish Sub Aqua Club linked to BSAC? Or a completely different agency?

My TDI Adv EAN card doesnt mention depth at all, just says qualified in use of 22% - 100% nitrox.

Deco Procs for me says 45m.

I was speaking to a regional coach recently and he said that the reason for the possible change in the DL depth rating was due to the introduction of the new Sports Mixed Gas program which will then give you a 50m Trimix Ticket.

So far as I can see it has nothing to do with litigation reasons its all to do with the new courses.

Well, they've changed it in the past. I remember when the Sports Diver limit was only a recommendation and many people regularly dived to 50m, did reasonable amounts of deco and had no interest whatsoever in doing any more courses.

Mind you, it also used to be common to go to 35m on the deep dive of the AOW course.
