I'd be interested to know this too - I'm still a bit reserved about going for the DIRF course (cost, need to borrow wing etc), especially if I do the course and either don't manage to do everything required or decide it's not all for me?

You realise if I do this course, I've then got all the backup I need for not diving DIR, having had one of the best divers in the world try and convince me! This could be a mixed blessing for you guys. How many people do a Fundamentals course and decide it's just not for them? I wonder if there's many. I get the feeling I'd end up being in some half-way house, which is not DIR at all. Probably closer to it than I am now, but it's still not going to keep everyone happy, is it now?

As for the smoking, it's high time I give up anyway.
Hi

Hehehehe. Its not dead easy, believe me.

Loads of people have done fundamentals and not gone on to the other courses. As with any course, some will take it further, others will use what they like and forget what they didn't like. Fundamentals used to be an introduction course or seminar were DIR was introduced. It has developed into a proper course in some ways to limit the number of people applying because it was becoming so popular and people were turning up with all sorts of kit which meant a lot of the skills couldn't be practiced (such as donating the long hose).

If you decide DIR is not for you then I don't see a problem. If you are against DIR from the start and simply want to find a way to justify it then you shouldn't be thinking about the course at all. Let someone else go who really cares.

Its a personal choice, the same as going into technical diving, cave diving whatever. Why would it worry a DIR diver just because you didn't like it? I assure you that JJ will be able to answer every single question you have logically and honestly. Either way the course WILL improve your diving and I am sure you will enjoy it.

Oh, and yes, its about time you gave up smoking

Andy

PS Again make sure you ask Andy Kerslake what is required and voice your concerns if you have any. After all he is the official GUE instructor in the UK. I am just a GUE/DIR groupie after all
