Thumbs up NDC on Saturday...

I was lucky enough to get along to the NDC with some of the YD crew on Saturday to try out my twins prior to the sea. It was the first time I'd ever been there and was impressed. Had a great time and 2 very good dives.

Thanks to Helen, Howard, John, Simon and Rob for a cracking day.

What was the result of the Jaffa cake challenge in the end?

The Jaffa cake challenge was accepted by most of us who remained over the night - I initially raised the bar with an initial successful attempt of 6. This was equalled by Helen, Rob and John, so I raised it further to 8, which was only equalled by John. The scores remained like this until sunday afternoon, when I successfully managed 9, only to be pipped at the post by John who got double figures and amazed everyone with 10, yes 10!

However I think my 9 was technically better, as I managed to get all 9 cakes in whole, horizontally, but there was definite "chewing whilst inserting" going on for the 10 cake challenge.....

My mouth is still sore today.

By the way, the diving was fun too, and was good to meet a few other faces from here...

(Rather tragically) I have been cogitating on this all day. The upshot of all this thinking (which has left me absolutely exhausted) is that I actually think that there are two categories of the JCC:

1) The Purist "Jaffa Cake Challenge" - the stylistic version

and

2) The Revisionist "Jaffa Cake Cram" - the I'm-going-to-do-this-if-it-kills-me version

So without wishing to be too much of a woolly jumpered teacher and 'everyone's a winner baby', I think we all need to accept that there are actually two separate records which stand here:

Jaffa Cake Challenge: Simon - Perfect whole Jaffa insertion and chew and swallow (9 cakes)
Jaffa Cake Cram: John - Perfect cram-the-little-sods in and chew and swallow. (10 cakes)

I have a great deal of respect for the fact that both men followed the multiple 'Competition' Jaffa Cakes with single 'Pleasure' Jaffas. I also think that's quite sick, but there you go.

I have to say I'm also impressed by the amount of tactical thinking which went into the respective challenges. I think that we have conclusively proved that men have bigger mouths than women, and that these two have bigger mouths than most.

I also think that it is noteworthy that on my past two little YD expeditions there has been a food related feat which has drawn gasps of mingled horror and amusement from the assembled masses. These feats were performed by the same person, so I think that we should award the 'Legion de Spam with Jaffa Leaves' and ask the admins to change Mdemon's tagline to 'Really Quite Freaky with Food'. Simon's should also be changed - to 'Big Mouth'. Bren / Jay / Andy would you be so good as to oblige?

And both of you are entitled to add to your signatures until such a times as the judge (i.e. me) decides that your record doesn't stand any longer. It's going to be like a first aid certificate. You'll need to renew it every now and then

Amongst other entertaining JCC moments which are worth a quick mention:
1) Howard's face when he realised that, actually, he couldn't breathe, and needed to get the biccies out of his mouth NOW. He seemed to enjoy his consolation doughnut though.
2) The 'darkest hour is just before dawn' expression that most of the gents got as they 'stalled' part way through the challenge - all of them got a second wind, but there was a distinct moment of 'well this is just not possible' which creates some very entertaining facial expressions / contortions.
3) Doug's running commentary. Hilarious.

Thanks guys, thought I'd split my sides at times. Will chuck down a few words about assorted other bits later.

Cheers to all that turned up this weekend though, I had a very good and very funny time. Really enjoyed all your company.

H

Just to say that although I didn't dive it was definitely worth coming downfor the day and meeting you all. I can honeslty say that I probably haven't laughed so much in ages... Thank you all for making me feel so welcome and I really look forward to meeting you all again.

Cheers

H,

I doubt you'll get many male takers who'll voluntarily refer to themselves as 'Jaffas'
