Smile Night Dive on 'The Alistor', Stangford Lough.

So..my bud and me went for a night dive last night on the Alistor. A wreck that lies in 23 mtrs in Stangford Lough.

My second dive on my new twin 12s..so still getting used to it and playing with the weight a bit.

Beautiful night! No wind, no rain, no clouds. Stars where out in all their glory.

Nice surface swim out to the buoy which is about 200 mtrs maybe. Then a few mins to get the old breath back and down we go.

My bud had his brand new Greenforce torch with him..lovely bit of kit..maybe not as bright as i thought it would have been for a 30watt torch. It's brighter than mine but not by much, although the colours are more vivid with his. Might get one next year with a 50w bulb. Oh ..mines a uk 400.

Great dive ,lot's of life on the wreck. Saw 3 conger,my first cuttle fish (lovely wee things) and lots of the usual..defo looked better with the Greenforce. We had a good nosy around the wreck which is still in good nick after 50 odd years under water, until my Aladin pro told us 3 mins to deco stop....so we headed back along the line which runs from the wreck along the sea bed back to the shore. Which is great if the weather is to rough for a surface swim or the tide is on the run (Strangford Lough has the second fastest tide in Europe i think).

Had to do a 3 min stop at 3 mtrs and surfaced after 58 mins.

Just about held the stop at 3 so a little bit more lead for my next dive.
Great dive although my hands where bloody cold after 30 mins and the rest of me was getting cold just as we headed back.

Nothing spectacular just a good dive with a good bud.

Lovely job!!!

Ross

I really miss night diving, there's a boat in the Clyde that does mid-week wreck dives at night, very atmospheric swimming round something in pitch black or being on the surface and seeing the lights of divers moving below. Used to do that a couple of times a month and night shore dives a couple of times a week.

At this time of the year most of my dives will be night dives i recon, as it's dark at 4.00pm ish..

Hi Ross,

B4 you buy the Greenforce , try Dave Vincents metalsub or you can try mine.

I must have done 50 night dives at Ringhaddy. Did you see the huge Lobster?

Glad it was good except for the cold, give it another month or two and the temp will be at 6C , freezing !! Although Stoney Cove is prob colder than this.

If you are planning another night dive let me know.

Hi Dave,

Phill used Daves Metalsub on ouir last dive..i think it only has a 60 min burn time..could be wrong. The light was feckin bright though.

The GF has a 90 min burn time which is what he was after..it's a cracking light just expected it to be a little brighter.

Regards

Ross

NO LOBSTER - it was ancient + would be like eating leather.

No we didn`t see it either.

Ref Dave`s Metalsub, he has the small battery. I have the biggest size + have 90+ mins burn time.

Did you see all the empty sardine cans on the wreck ( from people feeding the congers ) ?

We should put a sign up = BRING YOUR RUBBISH HOME.

i did that 'Alistor' once long time ago - lovely dive.

And ohh the current in Strangford is wicked - I distinctly remember being pulled down to 30odd metres without wanting to be there - not a nice experince - was filling my mask up the entire time.

Dinger

PS Nice write up matey
