My eldest daughter has been out here on holiday with us for a week and did her AOW in the 1st 3 dives, she then did a couple of dives with me very happily and asked if we could do a night dive too.
Night dives aren't everyone's thing and I've known people get really spooked by them but having taken her into a cave which she loved I was confident that she'd be fine. So last night we drove back to Mgarr Ix Xini, kitted up at dusk while a number of locals held beach BBQs, left Sue as shore cover and after a careful briefing we entered the water just before full dark. It was too early for the moon and quickly became full dark.
Within a couple of minutes I saw her suddenly change gear and start to overtake me, torch shining everywhere. I grabbed her and pulled her back to my side giving her the slow down signal and after that she stayed by my side all dive. We saw a lot of the local residents, loads of flying gurnards, bream, painted combers and wrasse. Aggressive crabs, loads of nudibranchs, a large sand eel and just before the end of the dive 2 giant tuns which I'd never seen before.
Finally after 55m I brought her back to the surface and as her head broke the surface she whipped the reg out and said "that was the best thing in my whole life, it felt like we were the only people in the world and could have stayed there forever"
We had the entire bay to ourselves, not another diver in the water last night and were extremely lucky with the life we saw. I love night dives and doing one with Lou was very special indeed. Sadly she goes home tomorrow but she'll be back to do more.
