I'm just wondering if when Dan said "commercial diving school" he just meant a PADI type dive centre - rather than his Uni club. I think the words "commercial" and "HSE" may have led people off on a tangent. (but I could be wrong )

Not for me, it doesn't matter who the instructor is or what the agency is, in my opinion the instructor is either taking short cuts or is being lazy. Although the fact that Dan can't get to a quarry to do some of this stuff isn't the instructors fault either.

Dan just clear something up, is this a dive school and you are paying the instructor for training ?

Chas49, A PADI "type" dive centre is a commercial operation

No, the uni commercially teaches scuba as part of paid for Degree courses.

Well, in that case ,,,,,, sounds like all of ACoP's is being broken.

Only mention is of a DIVING INSTRUCTOR

Where is the SUPS = ( Diving Supervisor )
Where is the SBD == ( Stand By Diver )
Where is the DT === ( Dive Tender )

No mention of life lines , surface comms , full face mask.......

You don’t need to be good at swimming to save lives.

If you're a PADI operation and are teaching then an instructor must have a safety diver and surface support to satisfy the HSE.

Fully understand that Nick,,,, BUT

If this is a commercial course , which a uni student does a course and comes out as a HSE Scuba Diver, then the FULL ACoP's under the Diving at Work regs need to be abided by....

This is why so many commies are getting concerned about getting these baby divers in the trade ....

Ah, I see what you mean. I think this comes down to what you class as as a "commercial dive". Commerical as in training commerical divers or a course which you charge money for?

I can understand why Uk commies are worried though.

Hse

This is the part of the university that will be teaching me the HSE Scuba next year, but they also do recreational dives on wednesday afternoons and this is what i will be doing. This has nothing to do with a HSE Course, and I am not training with them at the moment this is just a recreational dive. The point im making about the HSE is that they use the same gear for the commercial course and therefore it is to a high standard.

But thanks for your concern guys, but I think if i dont take this step noe im not going to get in the drink until summer.

I've only heard about the place so may be way off the mark, would Horsea Island be a convenient place to try the kit?
