Smoked Prawn!

The day started with much promise, great forecast, good plan, (aollian sky, blackhawk/or subsea caves on the freshwater ledges) nice early start, (ropes off 0730) then back to the pier for another group to the kyarra for the afternoon slack. The new lift was fitted and tested, new kit up benches installed, all ok
all aboard and briefed at the appointed time, off we go! just past the end of the pier " bit smokey out the back skip" "yep diesel, it'll clear in a minute" (it was the "right" colour) hands to points through the minefield of moorings, storepots, pot markers, etc that fill the water between the pier and peveril ledge, "SKIP that smoke is getting worse!" quick glance over the shoulder, "KINELLE" (or at least a minor profanity) about turn, get away from the ledge (ebbs away, dont want to go there!) anchor out as soon as we are far enough off to get the hook into something that will hold it, (still no alarms but PLENTY of smoke) briiiing brrriiing, its pete, (watching us away, "you got a prob?" at this point the eng temp' alarm starts to sing , "yep, bit smokey out here!" so into the wheelhouse go i, close down the lump, in the meantime pete is on the way with swanage diver, the lads are stood to with the fire extinguishers (unbidden, well done troops!) pete on scene in moments! lads (and lady) hop into the swanage diver, rapidly followed by all they're kit,(and my lappy and digicam, well you can never be sure)the moment of truth arrives. up with the engine box, SMOKE, no fire.
up with the bait table (covers gearbox and exhaust manifold) SMOKE,no fire, just SMOKE, 'N MORE SMOKE, in fact it was more than a bit smokey, (i coughed a bit!) i felt like a bloody kipper (thats a smoked herring lou)
anyway, to cut a long story short and save the end of my right forefinger (i'm holding my fag in the other hand) after investigation, it transpires that the impellor for the cooling system had had a complete sense of humour failure(unlike pete who remained remarkably unfazed by it all) commited suicide by shredding itself and throwing its remains through the lump, the engine wasn't running hot yet but the manifold was! look what it did to the exhaust http:tinypic.com/5fna0y
well the upshot was that pete legged it off to see a man about some exhaust trunking (there were spare impellors aboard) while i took the swanage diver to the kyarra, then another trip to the fluer de lys, and managed to squeeze in a drift for the troops who were on the prawn so at least they got wet, by this time pete had sorted the exhaust, the engineer (pete burden, top man!) had checked the lump thoroughly and passed it fit, and we got the afternoon slack on the k! alls well that ends well.
viz on the kyarra this morning (low) reported as 4-5m. on the fluer 11/2 hrs after slack reported as 4m, and high water slack as 6-8m on the k.
I have posted some new pics on the website www.killerprawn.co.uk showing the lift and the new kit-up benches, check it out!
lets hope thats the end of the "teething troubles"
another BIG sorry to the divers who missed out on the sky, hope we can make up for it next time!
mike. (not a smoke free zone)
