| I go on the principal of what a feller from the MCA told me when he came to do a seasearch course. He was asked what he thought about taking crabs and lobsters, and replied that he never took more than he was going to eat that day. I think this is a sensible policy and is one I stick to. I also try not to take the ones that are too small, and indeed too big, as the huge ones are the ones that breed lots. Given that I eat fish, I think that diver caught food is perhaps the most environmentally friendly way to go about it. Obviously I don't take stuff from marine reserves, and if i'm diving with a buddy who's doesn't share my views, then I won't take stuff with them as I don't want to upset them. But there's nothing worse then someone who takes stuff and doesn't eat it (or collects spidge and then it sits there rusting before being binned) ![]() Janos

| I also must admit to being quite picky on what comes into my catch bag, And as we have the local MAF officers there everytime we come out, Substainable fishing is the only way to go Steve

| Oh. One other thing I picked up from the MCA chap was to avoid prawns (because of the bycatch). And thanks to some education from Ellie, I've started buying haddock rather than cod in the chippy wherever possible. Janos

| it'd be a perfect world if the only seafood you ate was that that you'd caught. back to hunter gatherer times, wheres my club?

| My whole point on this was the amount caught. To me, thre or 4 over a weekend, for a post that seemed to be mostly about the catching, was excessive. Add to this the comment Quote:
I agree that habd catching is far more sustainable, but only where suitable restraint is shown. Take only what you would eat, and eat only occasionally. You don't have to have crab or lobbie four night is a row just becasue you have been diving. Sometimes it is like a kid in a sweetshop, or scary ladies at the first day of the sales - divers grabbing what they can because it is "free". Lou
