| Ok attempt at trip report Got back from Tenerife yesterday, which was supposed to be a non-diving holiday to keep swmbo happy as a result of the many other times I disappear. Hadn’t even considered diving in Tenerife as an option really and hadn’t realised the island had that much to offer. Then I saw Jules thread ![]() http://www.yorkshire-divers.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=23100 Got permission from swmbo for `day release` and contacted Mike to let him know I would be in contact when I got there. Arranged to dive on the Monday and found I would be diving with Jules, Matt & Bethi who were still there too. Got 2 cracking dives done and saw cuttle fish, octopus, morays and a lot more I would never know the names of. (don’t do fish names, I’m normally a strictly rust diver ) At one point we got buzzed by a huge shoal of small fish (I’m sure Jules or Micheal will tell me what ??) and we had Michael doing his traffic control act. Michael led us through some great swim throughs, and the vis was superb. The second dive was via a cool entry in to a rock pool which led down to some caves around 10m and opened into the sea. Saw a lot of life but also saw some bits and pieces i.e rubber tube, spoons etc which most of the dive was spent trying to stealthily attach to other divers. Used most of my air laughing and clearing my mask . Those dives over that was to be my lot, but once Michael and Jules finished telling me about the dive with the Rays I went of to break the news to swmbo. Got another 2 dives in on the Wednesday with Michael. The first did not disappoint, Michael got the mackerel on the way from the supermarket and I was treated to him hand feeding Eagle rays and fish. It’s the first time I have seen ray that close, superb, they followed us most of the way back too. We spent most of the dive swimming in the middle of a shoal of fish who were waiting for more food. Also there were dozens of Morays or different type in the cracks of the lava flow. The second dive was at an small bay that was an old tuna factory. It was freaky as soon as I got there I said I recognise this place. I had seen a picture somewhere on these boards of Bren standing under the canopy on the harbour, which Michael informs me he took. The vis was cracking on this dive, and the highlight was the cave at the end that was absolutely crawling with shrimps. That was definitely the end of my diving or my life would be forfeit. In summary though Tenerife is a cracking dive location, the underwater geology is fantastic, huge lava flows, swim throughs, caves boulders. Even for a wreck`a`holic like me it was thouroughly enjoyable, and I will definitely be going back (this time for a dive holiday) For any body thinking of going I can definitely recommend linking up with Michael and Rebecca. Michael is a great character and his site knowledge is superb, he even knows which hole in which rock different octopus and morays live! Any way a cracking few dives on what was supposed to be a non diving holiday and a big thanks to Michael. ![]()

| I go out to dive in Tenerife about 4 times a year. Whilst it's not exactly the Red Sea it's certainly not too shabby and the diving is *easy*. The vis is normally around the 15-20M mark and the water is anything up 28C in the summer. December to Feb normally present the best chance of seeing Angel Sharks and Mantas are pretty common throughout the year. There's often Dolphins around and there's an area where a large family of Pilot Whales hang out, but I think you need special permission to dive that - as I have only been there once when that was allowed to happen and that was something to do with some documentary film makers. Octopus and cuttlefish still seem to be around in reasonable numbers despite the blatant over-fishing. Cheap flights, year round sun, only 4Hrs away and nice easy diving. Get in! I haven't dived the other islands in the area but Fuerteventura and La Gomera are supposed to have some very nice sites. |
