Q. Why did the razorbill raise her bill?

A. So the sea urchin could see her chin!

This is an area where no one answer is right. Narcosis is debilitating but at what depth and under what conditions is both a personal and a day by day variable. My personal risk assessment is that it is worth the money for helium because I enjoy the dive more. I'm not a well-hard diver but I'm not on OC which might change things. I'm planning for a 65m dive after christmas so I'm pumping 14/50. It's a bit rich for 65m but WTH. It's my money.
I'm not asking anyone to agree to anything, just to make decisions based on various opinions and not on forum gods/gurus and before you say everyone can do that anyway, look at the reply from Garf! He is influenced by Mr Chase. Read the post and tell me he is not!

So you dive a RB. I accept its a slightly diferent game then. You must have gone through the learning curve with whatever agency on air though? I presume you enjoyed every minute of it without He but you done the courses because you wanted to and got where you are today. Better than having to do a gas course along side your first open water course surely?

I did a gas course as soon as I could with an instructor I respected (who hit me at the end of the planned course with "You haven't failed, you just haven't passed yet"). I was diving mix before then but not pulling deco or exceeding the depth limit which I viewed as the significant restrictions. I learnt a lot of diving pratice on that course but, as a practicing physicist, not much new theory.

As a permenant mix diver (I'm only off helium when helping with OC pool training or when I'm diving the pure Oxygen IDA rebreather) I see people narked much shallower than people expect it. I see people slow, I see them making simple handling errors, I see them just plain getting it wrong and when I ask about it after the dive they often don't remember a problem and that pushes my idea of an acceptable END shallower and shallower.

Now I'm not going to impose my ideas on other people. I'm no Guru just a person who knows how hard it is to know something. I read forums like this to add to the knowledgebase between my ears and hopefully it protect me much as listening to everything I could protected me in a former hobby. I've surrounded myself with equipment so I can look after my own gear and mix my own gas. I want to be responsible for the things my life depends on. If that means my opinions come over a bit loud at times I'm sorry, they were hard work for me too.
