Biking to Southend - the charity ride.

An update on how it all went, from a proud parent.

Adam and his mates managed to do the ride to Southend, they started off very slowly in London and by the time I met them Adam was looking decidedly upset at all the stopping and getting lost as someone else had planned the London part saying they knew the way, which was perhaps optimistic at best. Anyway once we got them onto the A127 they were fine, averaging over 12 mph, which given the heat and that one of the guys was riding a BMX bike with small wheels and no gears was pretty damn impressive. We all got into Southend, eventually, having put two of the kids in the car and their bikes on the roof for some of the way, they looked completely drained, one of them having taken up bike riding just two weeks ago but still managed a very creditable 20 odd miles. Two dropped out at Gidea Pk, East London, but Adam, his girlfriend and the lad on the BMX bike all did the whole journey on their bikes. Adam's girlfriend didn’t look like she had even broken into a sweat, most impressive, Adam never seemed to be out of breath either, which given someone had fiddled with his bike on the train into London meaning he only had gears 15-21 was quite impressive too. He didn’t want to re-adjust the fiddling in case he ended up with no gears at all. We lost them again once into Southend and they all came back into London, then to Harpenden by train, we picked Adam and his girlfriend up from the station, put the bikes on the roof, said goodbye to their friends and got them home at about 10pm, they left home at 9 am that morning. They slept well.

Youngsters/Uni students eh, lazy slack bunch, all they want to do is drink, sleep in late and take drugs.

( I think NOT)

Matt

Well done, Adam,
Having previously done the London-Brighton Cycle Ride in 30degrees, (a VERY long time ago!) I know how the heat can get to you.

Great achievement!

Andrew
