Farnes - what are we doing wrong.

What are we doing wrong???????

Club trip – 30/8 – 1/10 Farnes 6 divers 2 RIBs (inc 3 diver cox, 2 boat handlers).

Drove up Friday evening, arrived approximately 10.00pm, just time for a couple of drinks.

Saturday morning breakfast, 8.00am and on to launch 2 RIBs.

Satudays diving
5 divers on Somalia

Followed by 6 divers Gun Rock.

Back to Seahouses for fills and Beadnell for dinner etc.

Sunday breakfast 8.00.
Sundays diving
2 divers, 2 dives on CC (someone else fill details please)

3 divers 1 dive Pinnacles.

Back to Seahouses for recovery and then drive home.

Great time had by all.

(you others feel free to add your comment re. dives maybe one report each? – I may do report on my last dive - from my point of view).

So the original question what are we doing wrong stems from our club having approximately 23 diving members, so why is it always the same 6 sometimes 7 divers who go on the trips and what can we do to get others interested?????

Steven

Active divers

Your situation is typical of many dive clubs. That is why most of my diving is arranged with other dive clubs, and here on YD.

I suggest you form arrangements with local clubs and their active divers. I dive as the adopted son of TerryH at his club 1624, end of Oct I will be with Mid Herts Divers-I assist on their OW courses. Dived with a Bath branch last month up in Mull-half my branch half their branch.

If I wanted, and my wife does like to see me occasionally, then there is also a local PADI club I can dive with, oh and a branch in Royston. Being a diving tart seems to work.

now is the time to go to each person and ask them seperately (with no-one looking over their shoulder so there is no influence)
"we're looking at next years itinerary, what are our suggestions" then see what they say - of course never say "becasue you didn't come on any last year" as there may be a multitude of reasons that they are too timid to say

There will be folk who just join for the social, those whose other halves won't let them, those who think that the trips are boring, those who are warm water only... nothing that your club can do about a lot of these...

Do you do the same trips each year ? this is often a very easy way to go stale without realising

Get people to organise the diving they want to do. They might not be qualified to marshall, but anyone can book a boat or accomodation.

1. is there a "clique"?
I don't think so.... well maybe us uk divers v warm water divers. . . . .
2. do other members feel intimidated by the same 6-7 regular club divers?
it has been suggested so..... but we have tried to sort this out recently by cancelling our planned weekend diving to do as asked by our other diving members ie arrange diving for them..... this taking the form of all divers not so far diving in uk this year coming to Brid to dive from North Landing, with everyone who hadn't seen what was required to launch a RIB (and people who had forgotten) doing so and then all kit being taken round to N/landing by the RIBs, with others driving round and just having to bring suits down and picnic etc
what actually happened was that the forecast showed rain so although some came the main people who requested this cried off at the time we were arriving at South beach with the RIBs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!
3. just how much encouragement is given to the other club members to join in?
diving info given on club nights or you can contact DO
4. do you encourage wives/partners to go away on the trips?
yes - mine usually comes if we go away for more than 1 day.
5. do you make the trips "training" dives?
yes and no - maybe someone else will answer this?????
6. are the dives that are organised within everyones capabilities?
yes
in fact, do the other club members support the club on a regular basis?
mostly
have you considered asking the other club members at the AGM or by a questionnaire?

just a few thoughts but i am sure there are many more from others!
thanks I think!! S
