Sound of Mull trip report

Brilliant trip, as always. One of my favourite places to dive. Unfortunately I missed todys diving as I have work commitments tomorrow and it takes me 10hrs to drive back. Still got in some fantastic diving as Alan and Dave gave us three dives on Saturday , Greys Rock, Hispania and Rondo and Sunday Hispania, Calve Island and John Preston. Those of us that managed to get there early on Friday also did the Thesis and I think the plan today was for The Shauna and the Thesis again. I'll leave the others to write a more in depth report and just contribute some pics.

Many thanks to everyone for such a great weekend. Nice to see familiar faces and meet some new ones. Thanks every one for some good company and particularly to Chris (Dundee) for doing all the organising and also to all the guys who lifted my kit onto the bench for me.

Unfortunatley I couldn’t get any pics of people on the other boat but there are some of the Brenden lot.

Calve Island

During WW2 my dad went to Mull on leave from RAF, Calve Island was for sale, £300. He couldn't afford it on a seargeants pay. We had a few holidays up that way when I was a kid in the 60's, I would love to go back there.

Water temp was around 14C, quite toasty really. Vis was variable, about 8m on the Thesis a bit more on the Hispania.

The dives we did:

Friday afternoon some of us dived the Thesis, others did the wall at Lochaline, both were fab to get us in the mood.

Saturday:
1. Hispania (fantastic!)
2. Rondo
3. Grey Rocks (two octopusses, dogfish and lobbies!)

Sunday:
1. Calve Island wall
2. Hispania (even better!)
3. John Preston slate wreck and wall (much nonsense going on involving urchins, sticks and crucifixes)

Monday:
1. SS Shuna (fantastic, everybody briefed to keep their fins up and we left it as clean as we found it. The fun enhanced by a young seal playing on the wreck with us)
2. SS Thesis, a great final dive.

The weather defied the forecast, Saturday was sunny and flat calm, loads of porpoises in the sound. Sunday was overcast but mainly dry and calm (more porpoises off Tobermory, Monday was overcast (its spitting!) but pretty calm.
We had a great weekend of diving with some new faces experiencing the Sound of Mull for the first time.

Also, it gave Mark Lawrence and I a chance to show off our Royal Oak images to a captive audience on Sunday evening.

Good to see you all again.

Chris

As ever, I'm astounded at the beauty of your photos

Er, apart from the one of John inspecting the wall.
