there's dark......and there's Ullswater!

Even dive boat owners have to dive fresh water sometimes, if only to rinse the kit. So it was that I pitched up at Stybarrow Crag, Ullswater in the beautiful Lake District with Martin and Mick (Harlequin).

The plan was to show them just how dark a good old fasioned Ullswater dive can be and I thought we might be scuppered cos the viz in the top 8 metres was awesome - that is, there was some! Deeper then that though the lights went out and the torches came on, all the better to show up the silt clouds. I freely admit to being the one to stick me hand in the silt on the way down causing us to go our seperate ways at 16 mtrs. The plan was to each do our own thing if this occured so I had a nice bimble along at 10 mtrs or so till Martin found me and signalled he wanted to continue with plan A.

Down to 34 mtrs to see if the silt looked any different there - it didn't - thumbed it and promptly lost each other again. After promising the guys they wouldn't know which way was up or be able to see a hand in front of their faces I found myself in just that situation!

We all made it back for a coffee and a sandwich during which we went over the dive brief, signals and buddy checks for the dive we'd just completed - apparently I was supposed to be leading the dive; first I'd heard of it!!!

Dive 2 - nice 14 mtr bimble in the opposite direction, this time with a proper plan; to all start in different places and see if we could end up together - it worked!

Nice couple of dives - any lack of viz below the surface just makes the topside scenery seem all the more stunning when you surface. Thanks for the company guys, lets do it again soon.

Kev.

Hello Leigh,

At that site, Stybarrow Crag, the lake hits its deepest point which is about 70 mtrs.

In crap weather you'll find me in the lakes, otherwise yes the boat is running out of Redcar all through the winter.

See ya soon fella,

Kev.

Ullswater

Only done Ulls once, but it was worth while got to 40m, and my buddy came swimming over to me with no mask on trying to clear his face, then like one of paul daniels magic tricks the mask reappeared and he put it on.

I enjoyed it, lessons were learnt so good dive.

Fantastic dive Kev.

Found the Landrover at 34+ metres almost completely covered in silt and it's an awesome feeling turning the torch out at that depth and realising just how fragile and alone you are.

Nice hairy exepreince, wouldn't have missed it for the world...!

Next...?

Wastwater...!
