....and back for brekkie!

Just a short trip reportette about Turbie and mine's jaunt to south Cornwall. We've been camping for the last four nights at the Treverven Camping Park, a stones-throw from Lamorna Cove. It's a nice site, with a sea view, lovely hot (scaldingly so) showers and clean loos. What more could one want?

We arrived at about 3pm on Weds afternoon, set up the tent and started in on the alcohol supplies. By the time darkness fell (about 8.30pm) we were bored and chilly, so went to bed.

Next morning, we were up early and set off to Lamorna Cove for a high-tide dive. It's a lovely spot, and you can park the car right beside the entry point so you don't have to walk miles in your kit. We were in the water at 8.35am, the viz was superb and we had a fab 60 min dive at no deeper than 6.7m. Gigantic wrasse, great silvery shoals of pollack, sand eels poking their noses out as we went by and hideous spider crabs festooned with bits and bobs. Oh, and loads of those bits of green, brown and red seaweed covering the seabed in patches - always reminds me of the mixed salad bags you get in supermarkets. Best of all, on our way back, we were joined by a little cuttlefish chappie who seemed more than happy to hang round for a while, escorting us back to the slipway. Back for showers and fried brekkie...lovely.

Friday morning, another early start, this time to Porthgwarra, a little further along towards Land's End. Another lovely shore dive, although with a steep slipway to walk down. In the water for 8.45am, sun's out, viz is fab. More of the same sealife (unsurprisingly), which Paul entertained by blowing bubble rings. We swam down the left side of the cove and discovered a pretty little rock arch in about 10m. I'd noticed that there were no anemones on the dive at Lamorna, or on this one but, looking at the inside walls of the arch, they were covered with Jewel Anemones in pink, green, white and orange, as well as White Striped Anemones, which I've never seen before. I also saw a little yellow and white nudibranch, but he was a bit scraggy so I didn't take a photo of him. Dive time 52 mins, max depth 10.3m. Another fry-up as a reward.

Saturday morning, bit later in the water as we couldn't decide whether we could be a*sed to dive. In the end we went to Roskilly, a pebbly section of beach between Newlyn and Mousehole. Getting in involved a bit of a clamber over rocks, but nothing too arduous. This dive had a bit of everything - boulders, pebbles, sand, kelp forests, eelgrass beds, but surprisingly few fish. What it did have were Sand Burrowing Brittlestars, waving their skinny arms out of the sand, tiny Cushion Stars on the kelp, loads of sand-coloured Dragonets, Netted Dogwhelks and Blue-Rayed Limpets. I did wonder if we'd see any pipefish amongst the Eelgrass but they must have been hiding. Dive time 52 mins, max depth 10.6m.

The sun shone, the dives were relaxing and the breakfasts were much appreciated.

Lovely report chickie, glad you both had a good time and got some nice dives in. I trust you got sorted out for air in Penzance after your emergency phone call the other day?

That sounds like a few nice spots you found - both above and below the water.

Is your comment about fried breakfast connected to the fish picture just below it

It must have been a great feeling just to tour about for a few days and dive where you felt like it, a bit like a shore version of your own liveaboard

Hi Hellsie.
Yes, thanks for the pointer.
Just in case anyone's thinking of going there, Dive St. Ives seems closed, so too does the shop at Haye.

We went to Trevair Holiday Park, where we met the aptly named Phil who sorted us out.
