The trip that wasn't

So I get a phonecall Friday afternoon from Arfie, do I fancy Trefor Pier on Saturday as HW was late afternoon and we could have a nice easy 3 hour drive across. We have trip to Eastbourne planned at Easter and a sea dive would let us do weight check etc. I checked the forecasts, they were not too bad and the wind seemed to have calmed down over the later part of the week. A 10 mph was forecast from the south.

Well I put the idea to Mrs Endo and got a day pass. After being stuck behind every type of slow moving vehicle we dropped into Trefor and Arfie thought from a distance the water looked great. Lovely tropical ish colours. As we got to the car park, we could see the waves lapping against the breakwater and the nice colours we saw were all the sand being stirred up. It was about the colour of my coffee.

We thought we had better check further so wandered down to the pier, the entry is now padlocked, and saw a pretty strong swell and surface current sweeping underneath it. Visiblility looked like 0.

We were still not deterred and headed down the steps at the breakwater, to see that as the steps went into the water the next step was not visible. There were no boats in the harbour and not a soul to be seen. It was also blowing pretty strongly from a Northish direction and persisting down. Arfie thought it was snowing. I thought it too wet to try to photo the day, forgetting that the camera was in a housing .

We sensibly decided not to dive. I then had the bright idea of drivng down the coast to look at the possibility of Porth Ysgaden, maybe not for today, but for another time. We inputted the name into Tom Tom, no joy. I remembered it was near Twedllgggffhhhddhsashlllgog. ( enter any welsh name) . I started to type in Tom Tom, and Twatt came up. Very apt I thought.

We headed off in what I thought was the right direction. We found Tudweiliog, then a sign to the beach, then nothing much else. Eventually a car park provided a map, and we headed back to where we should have been. A couple of circuits of a farm with fierce ( according to Arfie) dog, and I persuaded him to take car down a wide footpath. Eventually we found the bay, and I think it would be fine if it wasn’t pissing down and blowing. I’d like to go back. At least we know where it is now.

Another four hours and a couple of unscheduled stops later ( why did I have curry the night before) and we get back to Chesterfield.

Seeing the forecast I think we will return to our natural habitat and be inhabiting a quarry next weekend. At least we feel like real divers having been blown out now.

Sorry to hear that mate, and I know it's no good to you now but there is a nice little dive site near there called Vivian quarry at Llanberis, it's small good viz and only 15 'ish metres.

Better luck next time.

Safe diving,
Steve

We were too late for Vivian, we only got to Trefor at about 3 o'clock.

Maybe next time!

Lessons learned from the day:

1 - My patience in the car is not what it should be.
2 - BBC and XC weather are lying incompetant bastards
3 - Bill has the natural homing sense of a pigeon (a dead one!)
4 - Curry is not an ideal meal for the night before diving
5 - Endoman needs to add bogroll to his extensive "spares" kit and perhaps some wet wipes.
6 - Welsh people don't like the honesty of me not liking rugby and Endo muttering about it being a puffs version of rugby.
7 - Chipy's close at 7pm in Conwy on a Saturday night, especially when the whole country is getting pissed watching rugby and will be pouring out wanting food soon.

I am now as far as I am concerned a proper diver I have driven for hours to go to a poxy little dive site AND been blown out.

Arfie
