SDI Solo Dive Course - March 20th 2008

I have to say I love solo diving. Although having said that all my best dives have been with a buddy.....there's something about sharing an experience that makes it more precious IMHO.

One thing to bear in mind though is that many sites will not allow you to dive solo regardless of whether you're qualified to do so or not.

I didn't know there was a course for it.


My first experience was when I started diving at first and my buddy got swept off the shot line on ascent.

Have had loads of solo dives since, some were not supposed to be but ended up that way, bad viz and such. Some were intended that way. The one I did on Sunday was an example. To be frank, I have enjoyed diving with some buddies whilst others were a nightmare.

Am always more relaxed diving solo and my air consumption is far less. I do feel a heightened sense of awareness/caution which is useful, also my planning is more meticulous.

Perhaps a course would be a good idea.

Venus - nice report thank you.

I am not convinced solo diving is for me but interesting to read your thoughts on why you did this - I agree with the first (learning is always a good thing), understand the 2nd but that's why we have YD!, and see your point on the 3rd.

That said, maybe it's just my inexperience but I will always want to dive with a buddy to:

(1) Share the experiences
(2) To add mutual safety
(3) To laugh at, and
(4) To buy the tea!

Anyway, more importantly,let me see.... you post at 7:35pm yesterday that you will never, ever, dive doubles... less than 24hrs later I hear the rattle of the tabasco bottle being brought out of the cupboard as you discuss wing sizes for twin 7s

12 months ago Solo diving was not at all for me - and I would never have considered it
in fact I thought anyone doing it was completely completely mad!

but, this year I was ready for it because of all those reasons I listed
you know when you reach that point and you want to learn something new? and find a solution to issues that you have encountered

there were occassions on my last trip when I wanted to share an experience with someone, but there was no-one there
so, I completely understand your list
