Probably because you don't end up being an unpaid dive guide to some muppet you have never dived with before, who probably should never have been signed off in the first place and by some stroke of luck has not yet managed to kill themselves or someone around them. (someone like me )

So instead of wondering for the whole dive as this person drags themselves over the coral and bounces up and down, never paying a single second of attention to you, when they are actually going to throw the double six, you can spend the time enjoying your dive and paying full attention to your own safety.

Maybe a bit more than that as well - I'm thinking specifically of 'buddies' who are liabilities, dangers to themselves and others. Unfortunately they're out there, and you may end up with one on holiday or whatever...

Diving solo to me would mean having a bailout option, pony, stage or twinset, I wouldnt go solo unless I had either. Ive done it a few times but now on CCR and although I carry a stage or two most dives, I still like to know theres a buddy in the water, most times we may be a good few metres apart but still the communication is there.

and as we all know, RB divers like OC buddies as self propelled bailout

Personally I try to remain self sufficient whilst also being in a position to assist others and enjoy a buddy for some of the aesthetic reasons mentioned above along with reassurance on some more demanding dives.

A diving buddy is often more than just a person to dive with. For me my buddies are frequently those I enjoy spending time with, discussing diving, playing with kit , planning dives, travelling with to dive sites and with whom I'd share diving holidays.

When it comes to one off or short diving trips I'd prefer a buddy I know thinks like me if we're doing deco or diving non ideal conditions (so most of the year in the UK ) but other than that I'm happy solo or with a relative stranger.
I like helping others and it's great to 'give something back' so I have no qualms about diving with a less experienced diver (hark at me !!)
However, I think I'd rather dive alone than with someone I've never met who turns out to be a danger to him/herself and me.

Totally agree, I know my own kit and know what to do if/when it might fail, as you said, just because you have a buddy doesnt mean thry can help.

Rule 1 : when OOG diver goes for your stage reg, punch them in the face
Rule 2 : when OOG diver starts dragging you down, punch them in the face
Rule 3: when OOG diver starts climbing up you in a vain attempt to ascend, punch them in the face

Obviously in the same light hearted banter and because I don't know which rules you are alluding to but I suspect I'll be in deep doo doos if I ask

One of them is the ol' "Don't drive with Strokes" favourite... Not sure on the other

The rule I like best is rule 6. That's the most important one.
