| Trip Reports: Discuss Chepstow (NDAC) mapping/bearings - shallow end in the Trips, Spaces and Coastguard Information forums: I'm sure these are on here somewhere already no doubt, but as I had to do em for my DM, ... |

| That could come in handy. I was at one point tempted to do something like that myself. Just for reference what was your distance per kick calculation to convert that to (approx) meters?

That said, the distances are short are the objects relatively big, so just follow the bearings & keep ur eyes open & u shouldn't miss em (and will get a more accurate idea of your own kicks at the same time). In good vis, you could find em without, but at the weekend it was like 2-3m vis in shallows - sitting at one end of training platform I couldn't see someone if they were at the other end. On another thought, if anyone has the other bearings - chip em in, perhaps someone can use em. In the intermediate depth, the devon aircraft (14) is due north of the BAE plane (17) and the Wessex helicopter (12) is just slightly west of north from that - maybe 350/340 degrees. From there the other helicopter above (6) is roughly NW. Last edited by mjgreen : 20-08-08 at 02:08 AM. |

| Ive been tempted to swim to each buoy and take accurate surface bearings at once point before realising it was far too much swimming and effort. If i get bored there and the vis is rubbish next time i may take a reel or tape and measure some distances as well. I do need to find things to do there now !

| Problem is not everything's buoyed, and can sometimes be difficult to figure out what each buoy is if you don't already know, since the buoys don't seem to correspond to the layout on map I used my reel - looped round object, clipped to line and then took bearings from along the line (and then dived em next day). Draw 1m markings on your reel line & do the same thing & you'll have a fairly accurate measuring tool to do both |

| Alternatively: jump in anywhere at random and fin off in any direction. You'll soon bump into something, it's packed with stuff at the shallow end. What we need is more stuff in the deep end. |

Will be nice when the buses go down though. Not that i've got any interest in buses on the surface but cover them with water and suddenly they're interesting.
