    Diving scapa from a RIB

I'm just wondering do many people take their own ribs up to scapa and dive expedition stylee?

No, not many. Maybe one or two a year, mainly from the rest of Europe.

You need a permit to dive the wrecks in the flow, even if you are on a liveaboard - we apply for them at the start of the year on our groups behalf. You can base yourselves out of Stromness, Houton, Burray or even St Margrets Hope, but the only place you will get air easily will be Stromness. You also need to be aware it is not OK to anchor or tie to the wrecks or within 250m of them. The boats up here work to the rule of two boats per wreck so it is worth keeping that in mind if you wish to dive a busy wreck.

One group come up and bring their rib and dive half of the group from the rib, half from a liveaboard they also charter.

I have dived in Scapa from a rib, and you do get to some interesting places - mostly shallower drift type dives, though. If you're interested in the wrecks, I would go on a live-aboard. A lot less hassle, and the prices are really good value in my opinion - we are going up in June for a week for £435 full board & unlimited chocolate cake.

I did it last year, permits aren't a problem and it has its advantages re getting the wrcks to yourself
The problem is cost and if the weather is pants.
We did it because we were taking the RIB to the Northern Isles for most of the week and the flow finished off the week nicely. You can also launch from scapa at the public slip in the bay and get air in Kirwall.
I am undecided whether I would think it worth taking a RIB just for the flow, probably not.
