Porthkerris sites

Hi,

I am planning to go down to Porthkerris but have absolutely no knowledge of the sites besides what I have googled

Hopefully diving with the club RIB and camping a night or two.

Anyone have any recommendations on good sites to dive?

Cheers in advance

porthkerris beach, drawna rock (on the side of the MOD building)
cracking shore dive!
diving off the rib, gotta watch the tides, the manacles are fierce. ask at porthkerris dive centre for advice. they will let you launch from their beach (for a fee i believe) and you can camp there, £8 per tent per night.

We did a lot of training off Porthkerris - I quite enjoyed the Volnay and the Mohegan, both of which were accessible by RIB from the beach at PK.

Drawna Reef as has been mentioned, Vase Rock on the manacles can be astounding, for wrecks apparently the Mohegan is good, missed it unfortunately, but had a great drift dive over the outer manacles but have also done the Carmarthan which is in about 20m. When we did it last year, there were a couple of large congors making home.

I love it down there. Best advice though is have a chat with Porthkerris dive centre, they will point in the best places at the time.

Also use the search function on here and you will come across at least three trip reports from the last twelve months down there.

Just to add my ten peneth (sp!)

As the above, check at the dive center, all welcoming and friendly folk, just watch for the MAD dogs!!!
If I remember rightly they charge £10 for a tractor launch, nice and easy.

Camping was £11 per night with electric hook up, £8 without. Two sites, one in the field at the top of the hill, the other right on the beach and within easy reach of the air station

A word or warning, quoting Lou from an earlier trip report, the roads are narrow, very narrow be careful with that RIB. It's also a steep drop down to the beach too!

Have fun, safe diving

I have used Porthkerris quite a few times as I am fortunate to have access to the buliding mentioned. Launching is easy using the tractor service and you can also get a mooring bouy for a small fee, see here for prices http://www.porthkerris.com/ . The only problem comes if the wind turns too Easterly as the swell can be a pain in the arse to get the RIB in or out.
You have already been given some of the good sites, however look at Charles Hood's book 100 best dives in cornwall ISBN 0-9538919-3-3, this book is excellent for the Manacles area. You alsohave the choice to go up the coast to the more sheltered Falmouth sites and into the Helford for some awesome Scallops if they are in season. Enjoy.

One of the mad dogs will leap into the air and catch pebbles if you throw them high enough (the pebbles, not the dogs).

If you're REALLY lucky, the resident Drawna Rock seal will come and play with you, like it did with us a few weeks ago!

wow thanx for the help guys, my mate has rang up the dive center for details and they have been very helpful.

i've got a copy of the 100 best dives in cornwall just cant remember where i put it

resident seal !! wow, that must have great fun. i like seals. will look out for it.

this is sounding better and better getting really excited about, we kinda anticipated the narrow steep roads and hired a landrover to help us out on the trip.

i'll post back a quick report and if i get half decent pictures link them when i get back
