| TBH, all I do is leave mine on automatic and make sure the flash is off. The thing that does make a big difference is learning how to use the white balance properly - see these 2 shots these were taken about 5 mins apart and the only difference is that I set white balance on the 2nd. |

| Very impressive, that calls for a bit of a tutorial I think! |

| I don't have camera or manual with me at the minute but its fairly simple (otherwise I'd have had no chance at 30+m on the Eddystone earlier this year When you're in photo mode, press the OK/Menu button in the middle of the 4 arrows and you'll get a menu with 4 options, one of which should be WB (I think its the bottom option). Select this and you'll be taken to a screen where you can choose from various pre-set white balance settings, along with the final option to set a custom option ( I think it has an icon that looks something like >[]< . Select the final option, then find something white (I take a slate in my BC pocket just for this), point the camera at it and press OK. |

| And just for reference and to show what a good job the 5050 does, they were taken in about 4 or 5m of vis on a murky overcast day at about 18m. OK, they did have the help of an add-on wide angle lens |

| Handy. Thanks for the suggestion - it definitely looks like it makes a big difference. I will also have to remember to pack the wide angle lens. I have a smallish external flash on an extensible arm - is it going to be of any use or shall I just leave it at home?

| The results Well, thanks to sch again. I tried pics without setting the white balance and they were quite as green as the example earlier in this thread. With the white balance set (on each dive) though, some decent results were possible, even with 2-3m vis in some cases. The attached pic is a John Dory on the Scylla - I was quite surprised how much life there is there after having seen it in April. 5-6m vis or there abouts on this dive. <PIC DELETED FOR SPACE> Setup: Olympus 5050 in an Ikelite housing with an Epoque wide angle lens. No flash, white balance set manually, auto everything else.

| Great pic John. The Scylla has changed a fair bit since we did it hasn't it. Adrian
