For me it depends on the environment. With PADI ice dives, since it is recreational, we don't teach with or using twins. But then we typically limit the length and depth of penetration. For that particular dive, we were about 50 feet from the entrance with a depth of about 25 feet. I understand your concerns about redundancy and that is certainly factored in the consideration. Some dive with a pony as well. But in the end it's a judgement call depending on the situation.

For more challenging dives, then yes, I use my twin set. On some ice dives we've used twins (not on PADI training dives though) where it makes sense.
