Mass Photo Storage.

I have a couple of 256 Mb cards for my underwtare camera and at full resolution they're probably just about adequate for a couple of days diving, however, I'm looking at another weeks diving in the Red Sea early next year and so I want some other form of storage for photos without having to lug my laptop around with me.

So, has anyone used one of these.....

http://www.thedigitalcamerashop.co.u...ls.php?id=1128

I know it doesn't have a screen for viewing pictures, it's purely for storage - I can view and delete most via the camera before downloading them onto this device and sort the rest out when I return. 30Gb should be plenty to store as many photos as I want to take and it will read the cameras memory card directly without any need for adapters, plus it's pretty cheap (I think)

I was just wondering whether anyone else had used one of these?

Cheers
Dave

Mass Storage

Hi Dave,

Don't know if this is any good to you but I have just bought an I-pod 20G, this has the facility to download from a card on to the memory and view back in colour my pics.

I also have the added bonus of being able to take my entire CD collection on holiday BUT it was more expensive at £209 but I then added the speaker system at a total cost of £239 from currys I think it was.

I was sick of lugging the laptop on holiday with me!

I have an Archos Av400 with 100gb Hard Drive. It has a slot for a CF card and downloads very quickly. It will play videos and music and can show your photos also. It's a great little machine but possibly a little more than you require. Great for keeping you entertained on your flights and when it's delayed.

I really would look at something that has more features. If not then have you looked at the machines that backup directly to cd?

This machine looks fine tho Dave.

Is that via the Belkin adaptor? I bought one of those for my i pod but then found the adaptor didn't take the XD cards my Olympus used. Had to take it back; if I'd have hung on I could've gone for the newer i pod photo. Ho hum.

I have an X-drive VP6210 which I bought from http://www.powerinnumbers.com.au/. Great company, cheap products and I had it shipped from Oz in 3-5 days with no problems with customs . Works very well and accepts all the cards you can think of and recognises most RAW formats for preview. 3 hours of battery life with full video preview or 6 hours without preview screen. Can't remember how long to download a 1Gb microdrive but I am sure it was less than 5 mins. You choose the size of your drive and as they are standard laptop drives, when full you can use it as an archive or just erase as required.

Hope that gives you something else to think of!!

Son, you're going to have to make up your mind about growing up and becoming aircrew. You can't do both.

The aircraft limits are only there in case there is another flight by that particular aircraft. If subsequent flights do not appear likely, there are no limits.

What we use is a FlashTrax SmartDisk - its 40G and has a colour screen and speakers built in - very small and takes most memory cards.

Much smaller and easier than lugging a laptop around - when you get back home, just plug in via a USB cable.....

It also has composite video out to play into a tv with AV inputs

I've got an iPod photo 60Gb and was hoping to use the Camera connector (20 quid) to link the camera and transfer pics onto the iPod as a portable hard drive.

It's a tiny little unit that basically puts a USB port on the bottom of the iPod - but only works with the Photo or colour screen full size iPods.

Unfortunately, the camera connector has limited compatibility, and certainly doesn't like my Sea&Sea DX5000G.

Nor does it like a media card reader of various types.

Very interested to hear if anybody has managed to get a normal media reader (other than Belkin's expensive one that you tried) to work with this camera connector.

Update (Nov-05) I've now got the Belkin media reader device, which has slots for various memory cards. Plugs into the dock connector on the iPod and runs off it's own batteries. Simple and efficient, but a bit more bulky than the camera connector. However, it does save on the camera batteries for the file transfer.
