Try googling for "Photoshop Mandrake"

It is easy to make an action for it and it works pretty well. I occasionally re-inforce it with colour balance adjustments.

I've used this for a while and sometimes find that the results can be a bit overdone and grainy.

You can force the action to occur in step-by-step mode where you confirm each step. This gives you the opportunity to tone down the effects, but I've not really sussed out how it works properly to do this with any degree of control.

Since then I've got myself a couple of books and the best thing I've found is to use the layers and level adjustments, tinkering with the histogram to tune the image for over/underexposure as well as colour balance.

The histogram lets you use a dropper tools (under the options button on the right) to point to black/white in the image to set the black/white levels, or you can drag the little pointers under the graph for a manual touch.

It's quite simple to use, and the thing to aim for is to move the light/dark pointers to the edge of the histogram curve.

Go to Image/Adjustments/Levels and you'll then get this histogram

e.g. underexposed shots have a histogram shifted to the left. If you move the right pointer to the left until it touches the graph, like this:

you'll see a dramatic improvement in underexposed shots.

You can also split it into the individual colour channels and manipulate them directly to increase the red channel graph.

You should find the actions folder in:

c:\ProgramFiles\Adobe\Photoshop CS2\Presets\Photoshop Actions
