Charge-Coupled Device - Its where the subject view is focused to be converted to a digital image. Basically its how a digital camera makes a picture. The bigger the CCD the more pixels. 3CCD's split the red green and blue to create a broadcast quality as they are much more accurate with the colours and very clear.

Panasonic has the cheapest 3CCD MiniDV camcorders I know about; Sony is my choice anyway but not cheap one: This **** keyboard jammed with shift function so miss dots and commas:;:;:;:;:; or have too much of them! sh****t

I don't know much about the Panasonic, I too am a Sony man. But, 3CCD, Leica lens, 3.1mp, it should produce some decent quality images. And it's under £500, it ceratinly should fit your remit.
