fibre optic fixing.

i've made a home made strobe as per instructions off a thread on YD Cheap and cheerful (?) strobe and so far it has worked. i am stuck, however, on how to fix the fibre optic to the housings of the camera and otterbox.

can anyone direct me to a fixing that can be bought?

I am using a fibre optic to try and direct what little flash there is available after masking that part of the housing off to prevent any direct flash giving me back scatter.

this set up has cost me around £20 so far as i got the slave flash off ebay for £1.51.

i'll keep you informed, how i get on, when i am able to get it underwater.

cheers

keith

How about gluing Toslink couplers on?
As it's optical, it doesn't need to be water tight, then you can use cheap Toslink cables.

I'll accept that ducktape isn't that permanent. But I would add that I have the Sea & Sea fancy fibre attaching thingy and the velco has gone funny and sometimes it falls off - that's after only a year!! So for the price of ducktape it is something worth considering.

For something more serious, take a look at the RS website. We use fibre optics at work and they sell fitments that are used to secure the cables (bit like whatdlegros has suggested). Sorry, don't have the link. FO cables are a pain in the arse if they are perfectly straight. They are very easy to snap and thats why most underwater manufacturers have used coiled ones. The ones we use at work are for outside work and are 200m long. We snap them almost every time we use them no matter how careful we are. They're stupidly expensive as well.

You will however need FO cable that has standard Toslink plugs on, in order to use these couplers. Just wasn't sure if yours do or not.

You can, however, get these cables for under a fiver

I suppose if you already have a Sea and Sea FO, you need a small bit of plastic tubing the right size.

i have sleved FO cables nothing special from maplin.

might try a bit of plastic tubing though, glue it both housing and otterbox and then glue the FO into the tube, maybe a bit too permanent.

i'll have a play later.
